Oh god the desert scenes did extremely formative things to my ideas of what is sexy.

I can’t off the top of my head think of any other western reincarnation dramas? I feel like you could absolutely remake it in Hindi with Partition instead of WWII. But, also, it definitely ensured I would never smoke.

So as a kid I was obsessed with Branagh and Thompson both separately and together and made my parents get everything with them we could find at the video store. I found Dead Again SO SCARY but also SO ROMANTIC.

A good fresh Star Trek take on those fake isekai title jokes

A tumblr screenshot showing a post and two reblog responses, reading:
1. "star trek would be the ideal fictional universe to get trapped in because you'd explain your situation and they'd be like yeah makes sense. no further questions. fortunately we can use the mysterious warp signature emitting from this system's icy moon to counterface with the solar radiation and slingshot you back home"
2. "I'm from a universe where your world is all a work of fiction." Benjamin Sisko, nodding. "That happened to me once."
3. "I Got Isekaid Into The Star Trek Universe And They Quickly Understood What Was Happening"

The degree to which she understands that character is just incomparable.

A pattern here: I often love it when a movie is very Color.

I didn’t say they were good, I said I have been insane about them. Though they are good. Mostly.

Nine movies: The Wizard of Oz; Sense and Sensibility; Dil Se…; Children of Men; Portrait of a Lady on Fire; Dead Again; The Last Jedi; Moulin Rouge; The Handmaiden

I guess I can also see people being uncomfortable with it as potentially anti-porn in comparison to the novel, but I think it’s pretty clear that the attack is on the library as *instrument of abuse,* and man it’s so fucking cathartic.

I think some people are unwilling to hand it to the straight guy director, which I get — I found Oldboy pretty repellent, gender-wise — but like. It’s based on Fingersmith!

Dragonriders of Pern is ANCIENT and INSANE and I was completely obsessed in Jr. High. They’re not very explicit but it is like wall-to-wall weird psychic dubcon.

Yeah, mass incarceration is an obvious evil but on the grander scale criminal justice is really hard to solve and I don’t know that I feel like I have answers.

I was thinking about this again and honestly one of the reasons I love Kylo so much is that usually in Hollywood sci-fi it’s only female warriors who have impractical hair and big naturals, but Kylo breaks those barriers

There have been some really popular narratives, fic and mainstream, that press all my bad buttons but by the grace of god I have so far managed to just mute and carry on.

It kind of seems like a “wrong place, wrong time” thing where poor Ali got caught up more or less by association in a flood of understandably strong feelings people have about fucked up academia stuff. It’s… understandable, but it’s messy and so unnecessary.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...

But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.
