“That needle flashes in and out of living skulls.”
Her great soul withdrawn, the story goes through its tricks in a weak voltage of vicious reactions and bad piety, which I'm sure will amuse you but come now, admit: there is no shock in it anywhere except Aphrodite. Aphrodite is pure shock. When she comes on stage in the prologue and tells you about a few simple stitches she is going to take in the lives of [Phaidra], Hippolytos and Theseus, you feel the salt of absolute cruelty sting your face. That needle flashes in and out of living skulls.

Oh yes, [Phaidra] will die -
you didn't think I'd put her suffering
ahead of my right to punish enemies, did you?

Do you know Moira Egan’s Bar Napkin Sonnets? #11 is at the poetry foundation (www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/160555...) and it does rock but I am fond of this one:
BAR NAPKIN SONNET #24
It's wicked to admit I love these bruises, the set of fingerprints along my hip that an FBI Agent could dust and use to track him down. I love the boy-stung lips from hours kissing, lips soft, but his whiskers grown rougher with the hours into night, and rougher still, we move together, quicker, as if our muscles' work brought on the light.
Mornings like this, I'm torn between two notions:
Are love's inscriptions like a form of art, or injuries incurred from constant motion: tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, arrhythmic heart?
And you should see my scars I sit alone, a glass of wine, a napkin, and my pen.

But the Sister Light Sister Dark books are about women warriors who call their own embodied shadow selves out of mirrors to fight beside them. I think I remember a description of the camp full of them sleeping beside each other? Also the cover of the copy I read looked like this.
Two naked light-skinned women, one with white hair and one with black, face each other. They are tactfully blocking the naked breasts of a looming naked goddess, whose hair, half blonde and half black, wraps the women in turn.

Apparently when Andrew W.K. was a judge he advanced Wolf Hall because he liked the cover more. But the founders say they know the whole enterprise is “fundamentally stupid.”
"The ToB, as a conceit, is fundamentally stupid," says Rosecrans. "We can't emphasize this fact enough. If you think it's dumb, we think it's dumber. We're writers and authors and editors ourselves
—we don't see any value in calling one novel the best of the year, or trying to turn art into sports. At the same time, too much of literary culture is unthinking and fawning. A lot of it, especially in social media, is about the authors, not the books themselves. Plus, it's easy to read a novel and say I liked it, or I didn't like it, and put it away on the shelf. But to pause for a second and compare that novel to another one requires that you figure out why you liked or disliked it and what that says about what you value. Art belongs to the beholder. But to give that beholder a mic for a second, make them test themselves out loud—whether it's the judges or the commentariat-and then have everyone discuss it out in the open?

A basic stitch but I think it works well for this yarn. Maybe a little loose because I accidentally used a larger hook than I should have. I could switch now but I think that would just look worse, and I’ve crocheted and unraveled this yarn so many times I’m not sure it can take another try.

I turned out to not have as much of the blue yarn as I thought so I made not much more than a collar, even at a narrower width. The white is a better size/shape, though maybe it should be longer.

…he launched an insurrection on January 6th, 2021, seeking to overthrow the constitutional order and retain power for himself notwithstanding his loss in the November 2020 election. We all saw it happen. The implication is plain: Trump is a usurper. He is not, right now, the lawful president, because the same law that creates the office of president also disqualifies Trump from holding any office, high or low. He is a lawless president, not only in that many of his actions in office are illegal (like, say, invading Venezuela without a scrap of congressional authorization to kidnap President Nicholas Maduro), but because it is illegal for him to be president in the first place. Every action he purports to take as president is ultra vires, beyond the scope of his powers, because he has no just powers. If Democrats are faithful to the Constitution, we cannot help but tell the truth about this.

In case you were under the impression that what was batshit about the Disney version was how horny it was: no, please rest assured that the book is like twice as horny.
Then from the captain, his thought passed to the people, and there came to him a jealousy of an unprecedented sort. He reflected that the people also, the entire populace, had had before their eyes the woman whom he loved exposed almost naked. He writhed his arms with agony as he thought that the woman whose form, caught by him alone in the darkness would have been supreme happiness, had been delivered up in broad daylight at full noonday, to a whole people, clad as for a night of voluptuousness. He wept with rage over all these mysteries of love, profaned, soiled, laid bare, withered forever. He wept with rage as he pictured to himself how many impure looks had been gratified at the sight of that badly fastened shift, and that this beautiful girl, this virgin lily, this cup of mod-

Speaking of journalists who know things, Andrew O’Hagen wrote this about Julian Assange in 2014. I thought about writing in to ask if he’d name the other hundreds of men so the 14-year-old girls of the world could have some warning. I didn’t, because I didn’t want to have my name in the paper.
The three of us went to a very pink café in the town and ordered sandwiches and cakes. We sat outside, and Julian got distracted by some young girls walking past. 'Hold on,' he said, and turned his gaze. 'No,' he said. 'It was fine until I saw the teeth. One of the girls was wearing a brace. When Sarah came back and asked what we were talking about, Julian said he'd been admiring some I4-year-old girls,
'until they came close'. I record this not to show how predatory Julian is - I don't believe he is any more predatory than hundreds of men I've known. It's not that: I tell it to suggest how self-delighted he can be. He doesn't at all see how often his self-delight leads him into trouble.

Mint
by Seamus Heaney

It looked like a clump of small dusty nettles
Growing wild at the gable of the house Beyond where we dumped our refuse and old bottles:
Unverdant ever, almost beneath notice.

But, to be fair, it also spelled promise
And newness in the back yard of our life As if something callow yet tenacious Sauntered in green alleys and grew rife.

The snip of scissor blades, the light of Sunday
Mornings when the mint was cut and loved:
My last things will be first things slipping from me.
Yet let all things go free that have survived.

Let the smells of mint go heady and de-fenceless
Like inmates liberated in the yard.
Like the disregarded ones we turned against
Because we'd failed them by our disregard.
