A key challenge for computational psychiatry is to distinguish state from trait markers and go beyond cross-sectional studies. Here we show that as paranoia waxes and wanes in patients with schizophrenia, so too do volatility priors

Makes sense. I know it predates your time, but I wonder if there’s more nuance to your dept’s observations. Eg things that could influence bias & preparedness such as internal vs external recruitment, applicant is straight from undergrad vs several yrs of FT research exp, etc. 1/2

I understand there’s a process before making this information official. I mentor some of our postbacs and the morale for this upcoming cycle is very low, so I think we should be as proactive as we can be to support them during this time.

Did Penn recently vote on this? I’m a little surprised these decisions are made over the summer. GRE prep, IIRC, was 2-3 months, so the ideal time to take the test was the spring & summer. Sure the counter arg is that there’s still plenty of time but I feel like this can be jarring for applicants

Lindsay S. Shaffer @lindsayshaffer.bsky.social · 23/06/2026
That’s super interesting. Why did students without GRE scores perform worse in the program? If they were admitted “holistically”, then I would think other vars (research experience, LORs, networking) would be emphasized (ie characteristics that would make someone a successful PhD student)
