It's almost a joke at this point, but the entire story of Mamdani's mayorship really has been "it turns out we can just turn off the orphan grinding machine, the switch was right there the whole time."

Charn looks a little bit too Oz-like for my liking - I'd prefer it to be desolate and blasted - but overall it's definitely an intriguing direction

As someone who takes long breaks from Facebook because everything about it disgusts me, but who is loath to sever all remaining connection with some friends on it who have been very dear to me, I find this deeply disturbing.

It's been a long time since I last refreshed myself on the Doctor of Thuganomics gimmick, but my recollection is that his rhymes were more of the PG "your mom has a stinky butt" variety than references to terrorism - but perhaps I am projecting his later image backwards upon his earlier incarnation.

I've never felt like being me was the same as how most people experienced themselves and their interiority, and interacted with the world, but it took me a while to realise that I was the odd man out, not the other way round.

The thing that gets me is that it would be understandable (if not pardonable) for a young twentysomething man to think being an incorrigible edgelord and loose cannon is a great idea, but Caster is 37. Surely he must have learned that it's worth running your edgiest material past someone first.

That seems likely, but I feel it would rob it of that sense of the real world being just as traumatised and in a state of turmoil as Narnia, and the sense of bravery not just being a thing the children exercise in the fantasy world, but also against the looming darkness of the real war.

Well. This is a thing. A few weeks ago, I announced my new publication in American Psychologist on LinkedIn and didn't do it here. This was clearly a mistake, as some of Bluesky has decided to pile on some... Critique of a student article talking about my work in context. I have some things to say🧵

I am however uneasy about the switch away from Victorian London to post-war England, as it completely confounds the timeline for TLTW&TW.

Anyone over a certain age who says "I want to be a writer" should probably think again about ever becoming one, as the vast majority of actual writers just write, constantly; there isn't a moment of "becoming", you either are one or you aren't.

It kind of works on Arrakis itself, where great megalithic slabs fit the environment, especially as it's a fiefdom constantly changing hands, but overall it lacks the operatic, heraldic visual distinction of the Great Houses of the Atreides, Harkonnens etc of the Lynch version

Lynch's Giedi Prime was an abbatoir, where all the festering meat was constantly power-washed away, except for the infection at the heart of it that was the Baron himself. Pathetic fallacy in action. Villeneuve was great on the Sardaukar, but everything else is dull, featureless slabs of rock.

Does Henry Morris count? I suspect not as his satire is generally very good, and he's seemingly doing well out of it these days. The Mark ne Francois pas account was definitely part of that wave of ChessInRusshire cocking a snook at the Tories stuff, though, albeit mercifully free from cockwombling.

In the vein of "public libraries could never be created today," a pitch for a calculator would get you thrown out of the boardroom. What do you mean, it just maths? Where are the ads supposed to go? How does it send usage telemetry back if it doesn't even have wifi? There isn't even a leaderboard.

Hello Bone Colleagues,
I have invented a new type of ankle and I'm very excited to show it to you. Early raccoon trials suggest a 60% increase in scurrying speed and dramatic increases in fine motor banditry. I know we are not supposed to create super raccoons, but I think you'll change your mind and professional ethics when you see how cute they are. I believe we are on the cusp of a new era in advanced human scurrying because if medical science has taught me anything, it's that improvements in raccoons correspond 1:1 to improvements in humans.
