Was watching TV as a very young kid and there was a segment of a kids' show involving one of those clockwork robot toys moving autonomously, and it absolutely freaked me the fuck out. No clue what it was - part of my brain wants to say Sesame Street but I don't think it actually was.

The middle of the poem *is* just days of Gawain sitting around being seduced while the lord goes off hunting, and the film just didn't really engage with how he, a pretty young man, *is* the quarry of both husband and wife, and not entirely unwillingly.

I felt like it distracted from the main way the themes arise in the poem via the girdle and stripping of Gawain's agency at the castle for a prolonged period of time. The point is he's a young man who bites off more than he can chew and fails to live up to his own ideals.

You're also right about it being influenced by pop culture, but I think in terms of the aesthetics and pacing. I wanted it to properly Get Weird and artsy, and aside from one of two nice shots, it never really got going with that.

No, exactly! It felt like a weird anachronism, almost, with fairly milquetoast takes on masculinity and you're right about the debunking of chivalry feeling off - it doesn't really speak to now, or to the poem itelf, which itself speaks to the impossibility of chivalric ideals in a fallen world.

One of my bigger gripes (having spent a fair bit of time thinking about the original poem) is that they somehow managed to take a poem that's got a lot of anti-sodomy panic ripe with potential for adapting to reflect current gender/sexuality panics, strip all that out and make it somehow less queer.
