Angel Down, Whalefall, and the phantasmagoria of manhood
Why do people love Daniel Kraus' novels? Maybe it's because he's not afraid of a big metaphor.

Lily @lilywrites.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
I'm proud of this one! As a little sneak preview, have this @markosler.bsky.social classic anecdote!!
3) Frank individually convincing both Janet and Brad to cheat on each other with him

(The only YouTube video of this scene I could find was marked as age-restricted, which, honestly? Fair.)

Thus far in my list, I've stuck largely to the hypothetical: What scenes might theoretically lead someone to make a surprising and perhaps unnerving discovery about their own identity and desires? This, however, is the first entry for which I have solid proof.

In the late 1970s, when Rocky Horror was just starting to get a following in some cities, my dad was a writer at his high school's newspaper. (Dad, I know you read this newsletter, so please fact-check me on this! I have heard you tell this story approximately 800 times, though, so I hope I got the details right.) Always a troublemaker, he decided to invite the school's Vice Principal for Discipline to come with him and some friends to a midnight showing. After the movie, the aforementioned vice principal, woozy from exhaustion, gave my dad some great quotes that he then went on to print in the paper verbatim. Chief among them, in reference specifically to this scene: "I see how bisexuality could have some advantages."

And how could you not after watching this? Frank slithers into Janet's bed, then Brad's, using the same script on each of them. He's tender and forward at once, purring to his prospective lovers and then glissandoing right into a squeal of delight. “There’s no crime in giving yourself over to pleasure," he coos, the bass notes humming in his throat. "Oh, Brad, you’ve wasted so much time already.” Can I say for sure that this was the moment that made a certain southeast Michigan vice principal question her own sexuality? No, but it's not difficult to make an inference.

my problem with "teenage sex & death at camp miasma" is it's probably really cathartic and fulfilling for someone who is just starting to figure their whole deal out but there's not a lot in it for those of us who started murdering teenagers at a remote summer camp more than a decade ago

my wife has a friend who sent Dolly Parton a painting she made & a letter explaining how much Dolly's music meant to her while she was transitioning. Dolly responded to it personally & paid for her top surgery. Sounds like an urban legend but it's real. I think we're going to more stories like this.

i'm sure you have been waiting with bated breath to hear about my PERSONAL AI POLICY, so here you go!
Lily: When ChatGPT came out, I had a kind of immediate "uh oh!" feeling about it that, I think, has been thoroughly vindicated! That feeling mostly came from seeing just how immediately the undergrads my friends and I were teaching started to cheat using it, to be honest. The work they churned out using it was flat, samey, and cloying — in those early days, LLMs were very fond of ending short stories with a pat moral. As a result of that feeling — and of the research on cognitive debt from AI use that's come out since then — I decided pretty quickly that, since I was a writer by training and profession and using an LLM would, most likely, subtly and irrevocably change my writing style, I just wouldn't use one for anything.

And I haven't! It's been pretty easy, to be honest; I got along just fine before 2022 and have just kept doing what I did back then. I am very good at using a normal search engine (I use DuckDuckGo on the no-AI mode), and I don't know why else I would want to use an LLM. I have been informed by my tech-inclined friends that LLMs can be good for coding help, but I have no interest in learning how to do anything in that regard beyond the basic HTML and CSS I use to make intentionally janky-looking websites. I do sometimes worry that my love of a proper em-dash (option-shift-hyphen on a Mac keyboard!) might make people think I've been using Claude or whatever, but I hope my overuse of adverbs and frequent misplaced commas make it clear that a human is typing these words.

As far as my policy for other people using AI: I don't intentionally read, watch, play, or listen to anything that used AI in any part of the creative process. (I'm sure some things slip through the cracks, of course.) This is, fundamentally, a selfish position rather than an ethical one: I like art because it lets me connect with other humans, and I find art that's made in part or whole by algorithm kind of sad. I'm under no delusions about AI going away any time soon (you can run…
