New Horizons is now *three days away* from shutting off its two heliophysics instruments, simply because NASA has not provided the $2M in funding it had promised to the mission last year or this year. There is no science basis for shutting these off. Our earlier coverage:

It's funny how people can see through acts named things like the Think Of The Children On The Internet Act or the Make Every Voter Rich Act, but as soon as the GOP calls one the Help Ukraine And Hurt Russia Act, somehow those lessons drain out of people's memory immediately

There's a broken cuneiform tablet from the Old Babylonian period, nearly 4,000 years ago, which preserves a tiny portion of a dialogue between two friends. It feels a bit like the conversations I've been having for the past week, so I wanted to share it.
Photo of a cuneiform tablet fragment shaped a bit like an irregular diamond. It preserves nearly 20 incomplete lines of text separated by a horizontal ruling

With the murder of Matteotti in June 1924, those conservatives and
liberals who had collected around Fascism prior to the March on Rome
began to fall away. At the same time, there was a sudden erosion of equity values. Apprehension grew among the propertied classes—many withdrew their support—and the opposition press arrayed itself against the government. There were large-scale defections—particularly among the business and financial communities—together with a substantial number
from the Fascist syndicates.

To add to the mounting difficulties, the formal political opposition “seceded” from parliament in moral outrage—
and sought to mobilize the public as well as the Crown against the government. The entire system was threatened.

As the year drew to its close, it became apparent that neither the monarchy nor the military were steadfast in their support of the Fascist government. The hemorrhaging of membership among the Fascist syndicates continued. It became increasingly evident that either Mussolini would have to surrender the government or embark on an alternative that could promise more control over every aspect of domestic politics. Mussolini chose the second alternative.

1. More Americans work at the Cheesecake Factory than in the entire coal industry, and that won't change. It's because of automation, not snooty libs. 2. Coal energy is now more expensive than wind and solar. 3. So this means: higher energy prices, more pollution, no jobs benefit. Genius!

SCOOP from me: the mass exodus of employees from NOAA is decimating a tiny office that literally keeps our measurements of latitude and longitude accurate — and, former employees tell me, endangers the science of how the US understands global measurements:

A tiny but crucial agency that maintains physical coordinates like latitude and longitude in the US is struggling as the Trump administration forces out federal employees.

Love this. In his “I Agree” installation Dima Yarovinsky-Yahel took the content from terms of service statements for companies like Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Tinder and printed them out on A4 paper with a standard font size for legal contracts to demonstrate the length of these agreements.
Alt-Txt: Two people stand before multi-color strips of paper with text on them that stretch down an entire wall and onto the floor. The title of the installation "I Agree" appear in all caps on the wall, too.
