Silent Hill: Townfall is good — very good, in fact. Especially the sequence in a municipal-style high rise building which plays like a slow-burn, Ballardian take on The Raid. It's a game less of psychosexual terror than psychosocial dread: I was hooked. www.theguardian.com/games/2026/s...

No Wolverine embargo review from me, though I have a piece forthcoming in the FT. My big takeaway: there is no more road remaining for the remorseful, sympathetic mass-murderer action star (see, also, modern Kratos). Enough already! This one's a miserable, emotionally stunted slog.

A variation on this theme: Trying to get creatives at one studio to comment on another. The reticence to do so curtails conversation so much. I think of great film features and you have other directors or actors chiming in. That never happens with games, except on very rare occassions.

Capcom is going against the grain of western business practices: - they use the success of their biggest franchises to do a lot of R&D on risky projects - they bet on long-term goals - they keep their people - they try to be on the forefront of innovation instead of industrializing a formula

This is exaxctly what Silent Hill composer and sound designer Akira Yamaoka was talking about: the "distortions of modern life" that are "invisible and psychological" — the dislocating, or even tortuous, sound of "information saturation." daily.bandcamp.com/big-ups/akir...
Passage from linked text referring to Yamaoka's contention that you can hear what he describes as the current moment of "information saturation:

"Still, for all Yamaoka’s leftfield detours over the years, he seems destined to continually revisit Silent Hill, just like the fog that descends on each of its cursed settings. Most recently, he wrote the score for the 2026 movie Return to Silent Hill, adapting his trademark existential dread to the confines of a linear media. For listeners, Yamaoka’s continuing involvement in the franchise is undoubtedly a boon. No one hears the world in quite such ominous ways as he does. Case in point: He believes that you can actually hear our current moment of “information saturation,” if you listen closely enough. He points to notification sounds, algorithmically selected music, compressed audio, and constant background noise. “Ironically, even though we hear more sounds than ever, I feel we actually listen less deeply,” says Yamaoka. He is interested in what he describes as the resulting “sense of disconnection.” For Yamaoka, “the distortions of modern life aren’t always loud or obvious—they’re often quiet, almost invisible, and psychological.” He believes this feeling has “naturally” found its way into his recent work."

The combat in Onimusha: Way of the Sword is filled with so many quintessential Capcom action details. My favourite: upon blocking an especially heavy blow, Musashi staggers back, his knees bending with the sword raised above his head horizontally, as if he has resisted it with all his strength.
