GenAI involvement would lead to a different result that was more detached from a deep engagement with my intellectual positions, point of view, and capacity to use the work of others. And if it would impact me, an award-winning author, in that way, consider what it does to people who are learning.

Anyway, remember that things are inevitable right up til the moment they’re not. “Inevitable” describes potential, not reality. It is a nightmare of the future coming to bully those who are asleep—not a description of some kind of logical or pragmatic reality, as some would have us believe.

Preparing for a workshop on teaching critical thinking in STEM in light of current, let's say pressures, and decided I should start my talk with a slides that lays out the values that form my premises:
Slide header: Premises/values: Cards on the table

Bullet points:
* I care more about students’ learning than about the “accuracy” of grades or the prestige associated with a specific degree
* I want to work collaboratively with my students, rather than policing them
* I don’t want to spend any time reading, much less providing feedback on, something nobody wrote
* Science is a human, communal process; there is no knowing without knowers; and our work cannot be autocompleted
* Deep thinking and human connection are always more important than polish, speed, or “productivity”
* Research agendas should not be set by & for industry

📢 Once more for the people in the back: - Most [more than 95%] of archives have not been digitized. - Most of humanity's knowledge and memory is *not* reachable by LLMs. - Believing that AI can provid you with comprehensive, definitive, "intelligent" results is folly.

bell hooks and Toni Morrison are relevant to AI debate. Both emphasized learning to be our own good company to have meaningful relationships, lamented society becoming so self-absorbed, and embraced thinking and working through the problematics of life––issues relevant to AI/on demand tech culture.

A few more pages I haven't yet shared from BRAINS - which you can get for $3 today on itch as part of the winter sale. It is my love letter to brains (and hate mail to so-called AI) alexandragallant.itch.io/brains
It feels like there are AI snakes on every plane sometimes

Two Snakes: you must use it! You must! MUSSSSSST!
Another Snake: "We need your fresh data!"
Chorus of Snakes: "Feed us! Feed us!"Writing isn't just writing, it's thinking through ideas. Finding language to describe your experience. Putting your thoughts into words.
Add some drawings, we got a comic stew going, baby.

The creative process is an adventure just waiting for you to discover it (a little pink frog travels through a landscape on his adventure)

It's up to YOU to go on a journey within yourself.
(The little pink frog is holding a map, all destinations are "you")

A plausibility generator/plagiarism machine can't help you with that. (The frog rejects the robot)

As soon as you defend a product with "it isn't useless" you're doing the thing the maker wants you to do. NOTHING is useless. It's the lowest bar for anything that exists, including a rock. What you're looking for is "it is the best thing that exists for this concrete purpose" then we can talk.

Specifically, As Lorde states:
You do not have to be me in order for us to fight alongside each other. I do not have to be you to recognize that our wars are the same. What we must do is commit ourselves to some future that can include each other and to work toward that future with the particular strengths of our individual identities. And in order to do this, we must allow each other our differences at the same time as we recognize our sameness.

Logo for the RESPECT Conference. It depicts a connected letter R and C shape, with these figures outlined and incorporating a central line in them, giving the appearance of a two lane road with a centerline. The connection where the visual of the "C" begins has only the center line connecting the two shapes, creating a visual link between the two elements while not fully connecting them. "RESPECT Conference" is written underneath.

Also, no one starts off knowing how to draw well. YOU HAVE TO DRAW BADLY FIRST TO GET BETTER. You have to draw daily, badly, before you ever get better. And its fun, sometimes, and painful, sometimes. Why are we teaching our students that none of this matters because "the machine will do it"
