One challenge was memory use on the character anims. @roguesquirrel.bsky.social went hard with using smear frames and other techniques that simply weren't possible with standard in-engine bone driven animation. Ergo, all animations in Roman Sands RE:Build are frame by frame vertex snapshots....

...we built a bespoke atlassing system. Most textures are stored in greyscale & colored in shader, and due to this we use the RGBA channels to store 4 separate images in a single region of texture space. So, a 1024x texture gives us the same real estate as a 2048x texture, etc
