A lot of opportunities come through the people we know. But when connections & network position shape who gets rewarded, what counts as fair and when? In our new preprint on network fairness, we identify 10 network effects that can shape human and algorithmic decisions: arxiv.org/abs/2609.13867
Figure titled “From Network Inequality to Network Fairness: A Perspective on Responsible Decision-Making” by L. Espín-Noboa and coauthors, arXiv:2609.13867. The figure presents 10 network effects grouped into three levels of network signals and collectively labeled “network effects.” A central blue node is embedded in a local neighborhood of connected black nodes within a wider gray network structure. Node-level effects are rich-get-richer, first-mover advantage, and in-group favoritism. Neighborhood-level effects are guilt-by-association, chaperone effect, reciprocity effect, and perception bias. Structural-level effects are friend-of-a-friend advantage, broker effect, and anti-transitivity.

Nihar Shah did a heroic experiment for TMLR: he spent 20-25 hours over two weeks interviewing authors of seemingly low-quality submissions about their own papers. He confirmed what we all suspected: people submitting these papers have *no idea* what is going on in them.

The model itself drives the technical aspects (validity, refusals, consistency, duplicates), while factuality and social representation are influenced by the prompt's context: what is asked, location, and seniority. So it's not one or the other, it's both, and they affect different things.
Heatmap showing omega-squared effect sizes from ANOVA models measuring how persona (language, location, role), context (k, field, subfield, seniority), and LLM model choice influence technical quality and social representativeness metrics. The model row shows the strongest effects on technical metrics like validity and refusals, while the context row for k dominates factuality and social parity. Persona effects come mostly from location, particularly on diversity and parity. Residuals are high for social metrics, indicating much variance remains unexplained.

Thanks @lauraknelson.bsky.social for bringing this up. That's exactly what we found in paper II (arxiv.org/abs/2602.08873). But in paper III (arxiv.org/abs/2605.28187, under review) we found both the model and the prompt play a role.

We introduce #LLMScholarBench: an evaluation benchmark auditing 22 LLMs as people recommenders. Each end-user intervention improves some result characteristics but never all at once. Accuracy vs. fair representation is still an open trade-off. dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/... 2/6
Overview diagram of the LLMScholarBench framework. Five recommendation tasks (top-k, by field, by epoch, by seniority, stats twins) are evaluated under baseline conditions and three end-user interventions (temperature control, constrained prompting, RAG with web search) across 22 LLMs varying in access type, size, and reasoning capability. Outputs are assessed along two dimensions: technical quality (refusals, validity, duplicates, consistency, accuracy) and social representation (connectedness, similarity, diversity, parity).

There's a genre of LLM criticism that I find so destructively unhelpful: using a single vague prompt to "analyze" data, e.g. "summarize the themes across this collection of texts," to claim "see! LLMs don't work." & it's getting published! Reviewers this is not good work pls reject it if you see it.
