The story here seems to be that the management of a Tennessee university wants to shut down their successful, prestigious and highly endowed theology school merely for political reasons. This is the state of academic freedom, and religious freedom, in Trump's America. Ominous times

WOTD “fancy a fancy word?” edition. Fancy. It’s an adjective, of course. But it’s also a verb. And a noun. Don’t get too cute with it - just get fancy! (Thanks to @lesleyest.bsky.social for the great suggestion!)

I realized a few months ago that I just can't do Bill Lawrence shows anymore. Couldn't finish Rooster, couldn't get into Scrubs or Shrinking, and bored by Ted Lasso. It's all too precious. And I'm tired of watching men fail upward or somehow keep overcoming extreme incompetence.

A naked, gold-covered Trump statue has been unveiled inside the European Parliament in Strasbourg. It’s called “Orange Plague,” also known as “King of Injustice,” and shows him sitting on another man’s shoulders holding an enormous golf club. Covered in reportedly 23-karat gold, of course.

HBO is the only service I have (aside from Apple, which is going away soon) that is ad-free so that I can fall into dreamland to the uninterrupted soothing sounds of How It's Made. So I gotta find something else. Unlike cable, streaming ad volumes aren't regulated.

I mean, this person must have such a limited amount of media consumed to have no idea that fancy has so many definitions. Has he never heard "flights of fancy?" Is he uncurious or just really thick? And he was so confident in his mistake!

That is one sense (and the original meaning) of the word "fancy", such as in the phrase
"catching [someone's] fancy."
It's likely Boyle—a lawyer with a Princeton education-would use it when addressing judges in a bench trial in closing arguments. The article is using official court transcripts.Mr Newspaper

What a bizarre thing for this person to argue. Yes, fancy can be a thing that is imaginary and definitely indicative of a person with a florid vocabulary, such as a fancy lawyer.

When I had my port installed for chemo, I was talking to a nurse as they started putting up the screening and then they started taking it down. I said, "oh no, is something wrong?" She said, "no, you're finished." 30 minutes passed in the literal blink of an eye. I felt nothing. It was amazing.

They don't let us get scans. We have to wait until there's a problem either with bloodwork or pain that won't go away. No "scanxiety," but the weight of wondering what's going on and if I'm ignoring something I shouldn't is rough.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

There's been a lot of talk about what women should say to their sons, but what about our husbands? Particularly those over 45? Mine reveres his mother and treats me well, but I fear he lacks the self-esteem to challenge his peers. Violent acts, sure, but I'm not sure abt everyday toxic masculinity.

FATALITY
A tweet from Joyce Carol Oates: overall takeaway from the Curtis Yarvin profile is that there must be millions of smart-aleck show-offy kids who annoy their teachers and go on to annoy other adults through their lives with their “contrarian” pose that hardens to a carapace over their faces; until, as adults, they still harbor a delusion that, if there is a king, or a fuhrer, he’d be impressed with the guys motor mouth and appoint him to his cabinet rather than deleting him with a negligent swipe of his wrist as Stalin did routinely.
