NEW ESSAY — “Men with Queer Nerves”: Ross Bullen on the odd phenomenon of “Jumping Frenchmen”, French-Canadian lumberjacks in 19th-c Maine who, at the slightest stimulus, seemed to jump, strike out with their limbs, or mimic languages they could not speak: publicdomainreview.org/essay/the-ju...
Black-and-white photograph of a logging crew of more than thirty men posed in rows in front of a low log cabin with a patched, sagging roof, with a dense conifer forest behind. The ground is covered in snow and wood chips. The men wear flat-brimmed hats, wool caps, checked shirts, sweaters and braces, and several hold axes. A cook in a long white apron stands at the far left with his hand on his hip, and a seated man near the front holds a rifle upright. Another seated man, smoking a pipe, has a small “×” marked on his sock. Handwritten across the foreground: “Paul Gouyers Crew / W.M. Allen × Foreman 1908.”

Interestingly, Bell also provides the answer to the famous question “where are the flying cars?”. Answer: they’re helicopters and the problem isn’t the machine but the inability to do traffic control. Look back at the Jetsons and you’ll see that George is one of maybe 20 people flying to work.

once again reminded how the designer of the furby sincerely believes they are alive radiolab.org/podcast/more...
CALEB CHUNG: Well, I have to ask you, when is something alive? Furby can remember these events, they affect what he does going forward, and it changes his personality over time. He has all the attributes of fear or of happiness, and those are things that add up and change and change his behavior and how he interacts with the world. So how is that different than us?

JAD: Wait a second, though. Are you really gonna go all the way there?

CALEB CHUNG: Absolutely.

JAD: This is a toy with servo motors and things that move its eyelids and a hundred words.

CALEB CHUNG: So you're saying that life is a level of complexity. If something is alive, it's just more complex.

JAD: I think I'm saying that life is driven by the need to be alive, and by these base primal animal feelings like pain and suffering.

CALEB CHUNG: I can code that. I can code that.
