@doctorow.pluralistic.net is still the only person who is saying what I'm thinking. Generally discussion or reporting on LLMs is fundamentally flawed in the same way. Parroting the core bullshit, then earnestly attempting to build a dialogue on that.

One of the best questions we can all ask these days is, “How?” It’s simple and smart and a non-answer tells you as much as an answer. Skynet is going to kill is? How? We are moving to the moon? How? Build a big net around earth? How??

I agree! I don’t buy the hype on AGI or whether it’s intelligence, reasoning, or whatever. That’s anthropomorphic discourse that muddies the waters. But I do get value from iterative interactions with these AI systems, which consistently produce useful results for my (mostly coding) needs.

On this day in 1994, the Clinton administration's heathcare reform plan was declared "dead" by Congress. Over 30 years later, the US is still the only industrialized country without universal healthcare. This should be a national outrage.

Whenever I see news of some new AI detection so-called breakthrough, I’m immediately skeptical, and, even if it seems to actually work, I wonder “For how long?” As far as I’m concerned, AI detection is a dangerous distraction that further supports the AI industry.

This is a lovely post that captures what I love about the kinds of problems electronic literature and the digital humanities have dealt with for decades. And I love what AI can do for these fields. The least interesting part of generative AI can do is generate text, unless that text is code.

In the electronic literature (#elit) community, we have been working with and thinking through computer-generated writing and natural language generation (NLG) for decades. This essay builds on our research and collective insights on to show ways to transcend binaries on human vs machine writing.

A grayscale illustration of a 3.5-inch floppy disk. In June 1992 an urban legend began circulating that such disks were edible if you peeled them first. There was a rash of hospitalizations that summer, office workers rushed to the ER with perforated stomachs caused by the metal shutter of a floppy disk. OSHA investigators eventually traced the source of the urban legend to a temp named Samantha who had recently been fired from an ad firm in town. The investigation stalled when it was discovered that Samantha’s last name, Social Security number, and home address were all made up. As far as OSHA could tell, Samantha didn’t exist.

The more I read about how AI empowered propaganda by the Russian government and other bad actors (some of whom are running this country) is being used to influence elections, and other mischief, the more I think we need to increase our engagement with and exposure to these technologies.

This is an example of why being granular about “AI” is important. The cited study from 2021 uses machine learning. Problems of training data/bias are real, as is automation bias, but this isn’t “ChatGPT, does my patient have schizophrenia?” Knowing the difference and potential implications matters.

5) there are a bunch of reasonable objections to AI but most people who object to AI, at least the ones in my mentions, dislike AI first and then find objections later. The water thing has always been bullshit. The psychosis thing looked like it was going to be a huge problem and then it wasn’t.

I’m officially coining the term menu poetry (#menupoetry) to refer to how menus (which already have a high poetic function) and food ordering create powerful poetic moments. I will now read this out loud to a Chipotle employee. And huge credit to my son Blake, for triggering this insight.

I love the term "folk forensics"—and indeed, many cloying tells of AI use—like lists of threes, words deemed statistically likely to be LLM output, and em dashes—are mere superficialities. Not only that, they distract us from the underlying logic of textual production in the 21st century.
