Work on the preserved animal tracks along the bottom of the Flag Fen Basin at Must Farm suggested the shape and size are indicative they were created by cattle and are reminiscent of similar ones discovered nearby at Bradley Fen.

After uncovering the second stake alignment we recorded each in situ before they were lifted, studied further and sampled.

At Must Farm we also discovered a second stake alignment! These stakes are positioned around the edge of a what would have been a wet hollow and seem to have been managing access.

From earlier phases of work, trees from the same horizon have been successfully dated. Dendrochronology has shown these large oaks were growing between 2589BC and 2308BC - bridging the end of the Neolithic and the beginning of the Bronze Age.

An old land surface or buried soil survives at the base of the profile (the bluey-grey horizon beneath the peat). In contrast to the waterlogged deposits above, this soil has very poor preservation qualities (no wood & pollen is scarce) - this a is testament to the soil's 'dry' terrestrial history.

The joy of digging at Must Farm is that it is less about orthodox archaeological features (pits, ditches, postholes) & more about old land surfaces, animal tracks, submerged forests, preserved fence lines. Past deposits are intact, articulated, & the distinction between natural & cultural is blurred

As a historian of Jodrell Bank, I agree! And the reason it is important is that it has been made to mean different things to different people at different times. Who's up for a mega thread on how and why? (I'm off for lunch now, but I'll do it after. I'll need the energy...)

The #OCAArchTeam working down at Sizewell C have revealed what is potentially a prehistoric funeral pyre, providing a remarkable glimpse into the life - and death - of Suffolk's early inhabitants.
Leo is stood holding a stone axe in his hands. He is wearing orange hi-vis and a white hard hat.The pyre ahead of excavation. It looks like a dark brown roughly rectangular splodge, in contrast to the yellow sand around it. It is covered by a grid made of stringlines and a tape measure is running across its length.George is kneeling in front of a partially excavated cremation urn in the ground. He is wearing orange hi-vis, a white hard hat and has brown short curly hair with a beard, smiling at the camera.

Doing a tidal survey and a part of salmarsh has been purposefully reflooded. My photo is poor but you can see a line of trees dying off in the distance. Reminds me of a very specific archaeological horizon in the fens below the Fen clays where we see marked tree die off.
