***Stop Press*** A rather incredible piece of news just in. The Crick has examined the DNA of the two individuals in a Saxon burial at Cherington in our dig with @timeteam.bsky.social & @cotswoldarch.bsky.social & found that they were BROTHER & SISTER. Astonishing what science can do now.

You're excavating a #Roman pit in #Bedfordshire… and find this Late #Neolithic beauty staring back at you 🤯 Gabbro axeheads were exchanged across the British Isles but this was already 2,000 years old when it was buried. It isn't residual, so, was it treasured as 'an antique from prehistory'...? 🤔

'The find, which dates to the 6th or 7th century, comes with extraordinary grave goods such as swords and shields, while the horse burial is remarkably similar to the one found at Sutton Hoo’s Mound 17.' A day's ride from Sutton Hoo... Exciting stuff from @cotswoldarch.bsky.social.

Still rather intrigued by this Bronze Age food vessel style pot, with a handle. It doesn't look like a it would work as a drinking vessel. What was it for? It was found in a child's grave (age unknown). Lovely little pot. @cotswoldarch.bsky.social? cotswoldarchaeology.co.uk/museum/food-...

👀 Rory's looking just a liiiittle bit smug, as he's recovered this #Roman copper-alloy plate brooch while metal-detecting ahead of excavation. With both inlaid enamel decoration, and gilding on the centre, it's an elegant Romano-British find that likely dates to the 2nd or 3rd century AD... (more)
