Hannibal not even making it into the Times best TV list really shows how it's just about branding - some crime/horror/drama gets branded as "prestige TV" while others don't. If Hannibal was on HBO like True Detective (which did make the list) its fate would have been completely different

After seeing the final NYT best TV list found 100 shows and somehow didn't even INCLUDE Hannibal when it should easily be in the top 5 or 10, I disavow everything I just said. Journalism and professional criticism are dead, corporate media is irredeemably broken and corrupt, let's just pack it up

You can't just disagree with something, it has to be "propaganda" or a "hit piece." Reporters and editors behaviors are analyzed in the most uncharitable ways possible. Anything speaking positively of something or someone you dislike is the result of bribery or coercion. Everything is corrupt.

One of the biggest signs of the almost complete right wing cultural victory is how everyone talks about journalism the way only Trumpers and Gamergaters used to. The minute anyone reads something they dislike they rush to discredit it in every possible way, even using the same language to do so.
