Like guys, the one thing you can’t do in Texas is blame democrats for statewide policy. Good or bad, the republicans did it.

The Abbott ads blaming the democratic nominee for the (very high) Texas property taxes Abbott is responsible for are pretty impressive in a shamelessness way.

This should be so obvious that it doesn’t need to be said, but given what kind of weekend it’s been on here, apparently it does: If you don’t want old rapists running the world, in office, in the board room, making decisions for all of us get comfortable with “ruining” young rapists’ lives

We're continuing to report on sports betting apps, and we need your help. ProPublica is looking for at least 250 people who use DraftKings and FanDuel to share their data with us and help us understand how the apps respond to user behavior. ➡️ How to help: projects.propublica.org/sports-betti...
A neon green tracker shows that ProPublica has received 28 people's sports betting data, just over 10% of the way towards its goal of 250. Text below reads: If you’re one of millions of Americans who have placed an online bet on a sporting event, you know how quickly you can go from celebrating your wins to feeling like the odds are stacked against you.

ProPublica is trying to understand how sports betting apps incentivize users to keep playing and when they warn users to pump the brakes. To do that, we need your help: We’re aiming for at least 250 people to upload their gambling history from apps like FanDuel and DraftKings. We’re not quite there yet, so if you’ve used these apps, you can help our journalists. If you’ve worked in the industry, you can also help us by answering a few questions. (You can also reach us on Signal.)

Fascism in the '20s and '30s arose from military defeat, national trauma and extreme economic instability. Present-day fascism seems to arise from boredom, impatience and chronic public amnesia.

feels like at least part of what is happening is that a lot of people want politics to solve the "my life feels empty" problem and the populist right is directly appealing to them

On the one hand, it’s comforting to know that Americans aren’t uniquely stupid, voters everywhere have skulls filled with mush and worms. On the other hand, global fascism is probably not an ideal state of affairs.

This one is my favorite.
Jan Wittmer – Angry bird
‘During my photo trip to the island of Helgoland, Germany, I encountered a goldcrest for the first time – and it was love at first sight. Europe’s smallest bird wandered right in front of me, presumably searching for food. To get a perspective at eye level, I placed my camera on the ground. My heart was pounding and my finger was glued to the shutter as the tiny bird darted back and forth. Suddenly, it came to a stop and looked straight at the camera. That was the exact moment this photo was taken’

Really good stuff here about how useless Republicans are.
Most of the major endeavors of the second Trump term, the ones that have harmed the maximum number of people at home and abroad, have happened outside of traditional government processes. Not just longstanding programs but whole government functions were ended by fiat, dirty wars foreign and domestic began without being declared anywhere but social media, public health was reimagined on the fly into something like its opposite, and things that Congress had approved and appropriated for simply didn't happen because a few administration officials didn't want them to. Congress has mostly gone no further than expressing meek and qualified concerns about some of this, and instead has mostly pivoted with distressing ease into a new function as a sort of content-creation organ with vestigial……governmental attributes. Senators like Schmitt or Louisiana's John Kennedy, who is helping Schmitt hold the sign in the photo atop this story and who informed Smith on Tuesday that he "[makes] me want to throw up in my mouth," spend much of their public-facing time making clippable video content. In an influencer-occupied government, the functions of elected and unelected officials converge on the same goal, which is making little videos for their distractible boss to watch on his phone, and later to watch other people talking about on his TV.
