One of the few birds of prey tolerated on some local grouse shooting moors (although they have been persecuted on other estates) - here a family of four Short-eared Owl juveniles doing well. But where are the Hen Harriers, Peregrines and Goshawks? Shot dead. 🤬 vimeo.com/1204131428

Went to see the Peregrines at Lister Mill and Dalton Mill. 2 juv and both parents seen at both sites. Stretching, preening and naughty cable chewing. Buzzard seen off at Lister by the male. Lots of aerial action I failed to capture. Well worth a visit soon if you're local. @leedsbirder.bsky.social

The illegal killing of Hen Harriers on British grouse moors has been known, for years, to be the main cause of the species’ desperately low population size in the UK. This male hen harrier di…

Tree Bumblebees don't just use 'old' bird nests, they will take over active bird nests and evict the adults, killing any eggs/young. Nestboxes artificially increase this competition, which is much rarer in cooler natural holes in trees. We did a paper in this: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

This field had displaying Curlew in yesterday. Today, the first run by the farmer with machinery of some sort. No doubt there will be at least one cut before fledging time. Yet all the reports seem to say the problem is “predation”. Has anyone looked at silage v meadow curlew breeding success?
