But maybe it's shittier that we live in a country where people can't afford ambulances, where people have uncontrolled chronic illnesses because they can't afford health care, where people don't have cell and internet coverage, and doing the legal thing means sitting back and watching someone die.

SO many querying authors stress over their author bio, but honestly, it should be the easiest part of your query. And no, you do NOT need a bunch of awards and publications to be taken seriously! Don't overthink it. Your bio really only needs 3 things:

Behavioral biologist Dr. Victoria Braithwaite: the first person to demonstrate that fish feel pain. Her groundbreaking research impacted animal welfare research & changed guidelines for the treatment of fish in laboratories & fisheries in Europe, Canada & beyond. She died #OTD in 2019. #WomenInSTEM
Candid color photograph of British behavioral biologist Dr. Victoria A. Braithwaite (1967–2019), renowned for pioneering research proving fish feel pain, sitting inside a science laboratory. Captured from a slightly elevated angle, she sits angled right in a black office chair while turning her upper body and head toward the camera, exuding a warm and inviting presence. She wears a white lab coat open over a black-and-white striped turtleneck sweater and blue jeans. Her short, light brown hair frames a cheerful, smiling face. Behind her, shelves hold numerous glass jars filled with specimen liquids, while a desktop computer, microscope, and lab equipment clutter the desk. The composition positions her as the focal point against a backdrop of active scientific inquiry, conveying an intellectual and passionate mood. This photograph highlights her historic contributions to animal welfare, notably altering guidelines for treating fish in laboratories and fisheries.

Some things I wish I had known when I was a new writer: Being accepted by traditional publishers has less to do with skill than whether they think they can sell it. Just because publishers aren’t ready for a story doesn’t mean readers aren’t. Writing the book is the easy part. 🧵
