Great profile of the leading AI detector, Pangram, and the people behind it—including a former English major who wrote a thesis on Ishiguro (me too). Fascinating snapshot of our cultural moment with AI, and a sober reflection on the future of the internet, teaching, and human communication.

BMC is a pooled metric should not be surprising ? It was explicitly mentioned. k=5 is deliberately sensitive and does contribute to BMC but central extraction doesn’t depend on 5 word matches. Some books have 24-69% of entire text covered by exact spans > 50 words and single generations > 100 words

I'm sorry we never got a chance to meet, but getting this note from Dolly really had a an impact on me. She definitely didn't have to take the time to do it. Blake Lefray has a very convincing video that proves why Daggermouth might be AI generated. For folks that don’t believe AI detectors these kind of patterns occur disproportionately in AI writing. It’s no magic that AI detectors that are neural networks catch them.

A glut of AI-written fiction is drowning out human authors, new research shows. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/28/b...
Screenshot of text from NYT story by Alexandra Alter:

Jess Michaels, a historical romance writer, has released 117 novels since she started writing full time in 1999, most of them self-published. She’s built a devoted readership, and has had 10 USA Today best sellers.

But lately, sales have been so dismal that she might stop publishing.

“The glut of the A.I. work makes discoverability very difficult,” Michaels said. “You’re talking about directly pirating my work, putting it into an engine so that you can produce a ‘Jess Michaels-type book,’ and then glutting the market with it.

“I cannot tell you how soul-crushing it is,” she added. “It essentially erases actual authors.”
