Whatever momentary use it may appear to have, the real goal of "AI" is to strip you of your skills, leaving you helpless. The Nahuas of pre-Invasion Mesoamerica warned their children not to neglect the skills that make life livable and worth living. From book VI of the FLORENTINE CODEX: 1/

reading Brave New World for the first time 🧪 i was prepared for the passionate defense of patriarchy but honestly got sideswiped by the central warning about the evils of using eugenics incorrectly

returning to classics you first met as a child is a true joy of adulthood. you can appreciate a classic so much better after you've had a chance to read pulp, watch slop, marinate in muzak

Two days left to nominate! Please do take the time to nominate a favourite or two. As I've said before the LeGuin prize recognises brilliant work other awards miss; put your slightly weird, most specific faves in front of the eyes of the judging panel and it may well make the short list.

Wednesday's review at @strangehorizons.bsky.social is from Andy Sawyer, on LB Hazelthorn's "Rare Birds", "an interestingly oblique exercise in weird fiction." The weird is having a moment again, but doesn't find a typical incarnation here (if that exists): "tension" is the book's leitmotif.

Most artists I know are very clear on the distinction between what is effectively data scooping our work so that we are no longer employable versus something like this where AI can do things we cannot do and assist us versus replace us.

It’s a goddamn shame that short speculative fiction is at its creative peak now, when its markets are in economic shambles. I wish 1920s-80s levels of SFF money were available now to finance beautiful and gay and provocative genre fic, instead of during the libertarian-punches-his-way-to-Mars era.

Any questions not directly related to the process of putting words down and making the words more like what you want to say--those questions can be addressed at the proper time. Which is almost always NEVER, don't let those stupid worries fool you into thinking they actually matter for the writing.

Man sometimes giving a talk for a conference is the worst thing because I can't just go up there and be like "The thing about writing that you wish to learn is not something I can tell you in a couple of sentences, you have to write and then you will learn it, thanks everyone, buy my books." 😭

one of my fav essays on writing. whatever you need, it gives it to you. Some days it gives you hope and solace in your own journey, some days it reminds you of your responsibility as an artist & then some days it gives you that much-needed kick in the pants & tells you to get on with writing.

One thing a lot of beginner writers, creators, and artists don’t understand is that finishing projects is a separate skill from the skills of the craft. That’s why we say to start small, you can be great at prose and story, but you need to practice finishing to do it reliably.

When Among Crows came out TODAY! it is about a man’s quest to find Baba Jaga undertaken for ~mysterious reasons and a woman’s curse that needs breaking & an underworld of creatures from Slavic folklore (not exclusively, but mostly) in modern day Chicago. I’m very excited that it’s now in the world.
An image of a woman in a white shirt holding a book, the woman is not in focus and the book is blue and gray with a man holding a sword on the cover, it’s titled When Among Crows by Veronica Roth
