Career Advice | Trump Attacks Academia—and Grad Students Ask if It’s Worth Saving It’s not just the federal government that’s telling grad students their work doesn’t matter. By Lauren Chambers and JP Flores: bit.ly/4wWpDnN #EDUSky #HigherEd #AcademicSky
Protesters in Washington hold signs demonstrating against cuts to scientific research. One sign in the foreground reads, "Don't bite the hand that cures you."

THIS
Long before the first grant was frozen, graduate students were noticing a quieter set of contradictions. They were told that teaching matters while watching excellent teachers struggle for recognition. They were encouraged to engage with the public while learning that public scholarship rarely counts toward career advancement. They were told that mentorship is central to academic culture while watching faculty who pour themselves into students get passed over for colleagues with longer publication lists. They entered science hoping to improve society and discovered that the system rewards productivity more reliably than it rewards care.

We aren’t abandoning academia. We're asking whether academia, as currently structured, deserves our trust. Lauren Chambers and I wrote about what it really means to “save” academia for @insidehighered.com 👇 www.insidehighered.com/opinion/care... @sciforgood.bsky.social @snapcoalition.org

Super excited to share a new #FAccT2026 paper with Nel Escher and Nikola Banovic! We show that algorithm auditing policies in the US are wildly insufficient, as they don't account for how public sector algorithms actually function in practice. dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1...

presenting my first first-author paper (!), "Beyond Big Tech: Advocacy Technologists within Mission-Driven Civil Society Organizations" at #CSCW2025 in Bergen today! my firstborn child out is in the world -- and won an impact award 🥲🏆 (!!!) check it out: laurenmarietta.github.io/beyond-big-tech
one-page infographic PDF conveying the main takeaways from the paper, including a summary, the research questions, background, methods, results, and implications.

The summary reads, "A new kind of tech worker is contributing materially to mission-driven projects from within nonprofit advocacy groups. These interdisciplinary professionals reflect shifting values and new orientations of power around tech and policy."

Questions include: "(1) who are the tech experts working inside mission-driven nonprofits? (2) how do they operate in their roles? (3) what might they tell us about the shifting relationship between tech and advocacy?"

Background reads "Over the past two decades, civil society, government, and academic work across domains has seen new tech initiatives - including non- computational domains such as policy. Mean-while, the techlash soured Big Tech’s public image and interest in public interest tech has grown."

Methods include:
"23 semi-structured video interviews, Mar-Oct 2024;
recruited individuals who (1) worked for an advocacy
organization and (2) had tech skills or expertise used in service of advocacy;
prioritized domains which have historically not been data- or
tech-oriented;
reflexive thematic analysis"

implications include:
"(1) advocacy technologists are occupying a critical niche in advocacy work as boundary-crossers & knowledge brokers;
(2) these workers reject Big Tech’s status quo as part of a broader movement (inc. labor organizing);
(3) rarity of cross-disciplinary training; professional associations or ad hoc groups can offer mentors & community;
(4) computational strategies bolster advocacy; critical eyes check the tech sector and its effects on society;
(5) importance of studying and supporting tech workers beyond the private sector"opening slide for a conference presentation at CSCW. Includes the title, "beyond big tech: advocacy technologists in mission-driven civil society organizations," the presenter name, lauren m. chambers, and the logo for the UC Berkeley School of Information
