Had a student confused about how the feds could have suppressed the first KKK. They seemed to think, quite honestly, that racist terrorism is legally protected political activity/a free speech issue. I had to explain that, no, organized crime/terrorism is in fact against the law.

I am not being hyperbolic. Our insistence on segregating our histories, in encapsulating the struggle for voting/civil rights as a Black struggle and not an American one, has helped bring us to this moment. We did not have representative democracy until 1965. W/o the VRA, it is unlikely to survive.

This piece begins with Amity Shlaes' most common and most deceitful trick -- citing the unemployment numbers in 1938, when the country fell into a recession because FDR had been persuaded to *ease off* the New Deal, as proof that the New Deal didn't work. Pure hackery.
