I know many of you are scared about the next four years. Know that with this community we are building, we will get through it. And, we will do it together.

I’ve decided that for this week, I’m not checking the news, and instead paying attention to all the things I’m grateful for. It’s a spiritual practice. We can take breaks from the yuck.

Makes me sad re-reading this amazing letter from ex-Watergate Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox sent to high school seniors in 1994 after they asked him “What should Americans learn from Watergate?” 20 years later in ‘94. His answer is remarkable—unfortunately things didn’t work out so well in 2024.

This moment in Bluesky is a great example of how joy itself can be defiance and resistance. We are just hanging out, shitposting, being silly, happy, and normal. It is being treated as if it is transgressive, opting out of the endless negativity. Because in a way, it is. Joy is my favorite weapon.

News has just broke that Trump plans to eject trans people from the military within days of inauguration. Trans servicemembers who have served 19 years will lose their pensions and healthcare. This is obscene. They served our country, and will be kicked to the side like trash.

To grab the limelight, Nancy Mace has targeted Sarah McBride, the nation’s first elected trans House member. The vitriol from Mace has been contemptible. This is in sharp contrast with McBride, who has acted commendably and with grace. And ironically, McBride now has high national visibility.

I am sitting here, Sundays being my day to write. I asked myself: What's the point? And you know what, *that* is the point. Create, despite despair. Create as an act of defiance. Create words, like those what helped me when I needed it, that might help others. I can only hope that's the case.

Books are medicine. Not because they're escapist, but because they're human. Reading is slowness, and nuance, and discovery—and compassion. It's attention in a world that's trying, at every turn, to distract you. An author shares the intimacy of her thoughts, and for a moment, we're believers.

"Life is short and the world is at least half terrible, and for every kind stranger, there is one who would break you, though I keep this from my children.
