This is the playbook, folks. If you're not paying attention now and doing something about it, then you're going to have to sit down the rest of your life because democracy is being taken away. Do not be quiet in this moment.

The form of mercury that was used in a small proportion of flu vaccines was safe. Because not all mercury-containing compounds are the same.
What about thimerosal? Few vaccines contain thimerosal, and it is easy to get thimerosal-free vaccines if you choose. Thimerosal is an organic, ethylmercury compound. The mercury can be harmful to humans is methylmercury. Ethylmercury: Leaves your body in less than a week and is unlikely to cause harm. Found in a few vaccines and in contact solutions. Methylmercury: This can build up in your body and cause harm in high levels. Found in many kinds of fish and shellfish.

A good thread on today in America with the launch of US concentration camps, and the moral dilemmas all of us are facing. It happened slowly in 1930s Germany too; many people were tested in different ways. Will you take the moral stand when tested?

On brand. Disaster relief will now be a personal favor from the President to communities that pledge loyalty. Be grateful if you're from a (relatively) non-disaster prone part of the country.

Feeling a lot like I did in early days of the pandemic these days. It is so clear what’s coming: The people that will die because of cuts in global health, because of cuts to research, because of the concerted anti-vaccine push. It’s clear what’s coming, but we will have to wait to count the dead.🧪

I am hopeful of this too, but it can't wait. If things continue like this for the next 18 months, we will lose huge swaths of our biomedical (and I assume other fields) workforce, including me I am an early stage investigator, and if I don't get grant funding in the next 2 years, I can't continue 🧪

Tip for PhD applicants reaching out to prospective advisors: Don’t use an LLM to write these emails. It’s not a great first impression to express your admiration for a recent paper the faculty member published if that paper does not exist.

Enormous congratulations to Dr. Rebecca Signer, who successfully defended her PhD thesis today! Rebecca's thesis examines the differences between eating disorders, obesity, thinness, and depression using a case-case gwas, and then delves into how our BMI can change regulation of gene expression.

If there is one thing scientists need to know right now it’s this. Every effort you make now has to be directed at reaching the average normal person. That means reaching off Bluesky. Hold local events, write local papers, get on local TV. Go to any space average people get info.

+1e9 This isn’t just about NIH or NSF, it’s not about biology vs math/physics vs health outcomes research, not about intramural or extramural. This is a coordinated attack on ALL US science. The gov’t / academia partnership IS what makes US science. They’re trying to end all science research.

This is a room where we turn very modest salaries and budgets (and lots of coffee) into new knowledge, life-saving innovations, and technology that feeds business growth. It's literally the loom that spins hay into gold but these numpties are suddenly worried about the cost of hay.
A research lab from Northwestern, chosen because it's generic and sort of zoomed out. Three scientists are visible in lab coats, and there are benches and shelving, with glass along one wall showing another high-rise building nearby. Overhead fluorescents provide light.
