Either way, and without any sense of irony, those who were provoked by the message of our post ended up demonstrating the truth of it: whether personal or professional, AI use is cutting you off from other other people, in ways they may be too polite or shy to point out to you.

Protests have now spread to universities and education workers. On the 6th of October, Union étudiante reported over 57 university sites blocked. Organisers counted 450,000 demonstrators nationwide, including 100,000 in Paris, supporting students’ demands and opposing police repression.

While Parisian pundits blamed far-left party LFI for stoking grassroots protests, its lawmakers were on the ground supporting students & filming police repression by late Sept. Ahead of 2027, this could be a game changer among young voters, whose electoral participation has historically been low.

The problem is that we've started with the assumption that AI will be an economic driver (especially when it comes to productivity), instead of starting with a hypothesis to test. Something I blame on the economic context of when ChatGPT launched. www.wheresyoured.at/premium-how-...
When ChatGPT debuted at the end of 2022, it was, for lack of a better word, what Corporate America and central bank economists were desperately looking for.

You see, back then, the world was wrestling with high (though not historically all that massive) levels of inflation.

Inflation is an awkward beast to tame — and I use that word, tame, deliberately because (from an economic perspective) deflation is an arguably worse evil. There’s only really two ways to go about doing it.

The first way is the one we’re all familiar with, and that’s through monetary policy. By raising interest rates, you make money more expensive. Borrowing costs more, and people have a greater incentive to save. That, in turn, “cools down” the economy.

I don’t like that euphemism, but it’s one that economists use all the time, and so I’ll use it here, although I won’t sugar coat it for you. Really, what we’re talking about is job losses, business failures, and debt becoming more expensive (meaning that people are less able to finance big-ticket items like cars and homes).

Higher interest rates are like chemotherapy — something that you use because the alternative (rampant inflation) is worse, but in the knowledge that it causes its own fair share of damage. The second lever to control inflation — and one that doesn’t get used all that much, for reasons we’ll get into shortly —- is increasing productivity. If it costs less “stuff” to make a unit of something (be that human working hours, or raw materials, or energy), a company can maintain the existing price of a given thing, or increase prices at a far slower rate.

The reason why increasing productivity isn’t used as often as monetary policy to control inflation is because… well… It's expensive and it takes time.

A factory producing furniture could become more productive if it invested in new machinery, but those machines might take years to build and install, and doing so will cost millions of dollars.

A government might try to improve productivity by investing in, say, transportation infrastructure, reducing the amount of time that it takes for workers to get from home to the office, or for trucks to travel from warehouses to retailers. But that too is something that’s expensive and that can take years (or decades) to accomplish.

And so we use monetary policy to control inflation because it’s the cheapest, easiest, and quickest thing to do.

At least, that was the assumption before ChatGPT and the emergence of generative AI.And so, from this economic malaise, we got essays like this one, written in July of 2023 by Steven Rattner, a former Obama-era counsellor to the Secretary of the Treasury, titled: “Full Speed Ahead on A.I. Our Economy Needs It.”

Higher worker productivity translates into higher wages and cheaper goods, which become more purchasing power, which stimulates more consumption, which induces more production, which creates new jobs. That, essentially, is how growth has always happened.

This makes A.I. a must-have, not just a nice-to-have. We can only achieve lasting economic progress and rising standards of living by increasing how much each worker produces. Technology — whether in the form of looms or robots or artificial intelligence — is central to that objective.
Rattner closed his argument by referencing a report from Goldman Sachs (which he described as “among the most bullish of the techno-bulls”), which speculated that AI could “help return our productivity growth rate to the halcyon days of the mid-20th century.”

“I, for one, am fervently hoping that the Goldman report proves correct and that A.I. unleashes a new era of technological and economic progress — and that we take the right steps to be sure the rewards are widely shared,” he said.
