Everyone has lots of thoughts and feelings about jeopardy coverage systems and @lekshmimd.bsky.social and I had our share of jeopardy calls while working on this! Check out our thoughts with Dr. Berman on a way to move forward: link.springer.com/article/10.1...

In this study of GME trainees, 14% of resident and fellow physicians reported food insecurity; those with food insecurity were more likely to experience burnout and social isolation. ja.ma/48Lbrp2
Bar graph comparing residents/fellows experiencing vs. not experiencing food insecurity, measuring "Overall burnout" & "Intent to stay." "Yes" to food insecurity shows higher burnout (p<.001) & lower intent to stay (p=.02).

The abrupt terminations of more than 1,000 employees, including new Epidemic Intelligence Officers, across CDC are deeply disturbing. For more than 70 years, EIS officers have served on America’s front line as its disease detectives, ready at a moment’s notice to respond to emerging outbreaks.

It's incredibly disheartening to hear about dedicated public health professionals getting mass-laid off from CDC. Including first year epidemic intelligence service officers. This program has been the backbone of outbreak investigations in US since 1951. Decimating this workforce makes us less safe.

Today, representatives of the Agency's front office and DOGE instructed me to violate the due process of our employees by issuing immediate termination notices to a group of employees without due process. I refused and have provided Acting Administrator Gray with written notification of my refusal. I have recommended in that written notification that his office cease ar desist from further illegal activity.
It is and has always been my office's commitment to the workforce that we ensure all employees receive their due process in any of our actions. I will not be party to a violation of that commitment.
I was notified moments ago that I will be placed on administrative leave, effective immediately. It has been an honor working with all of you at this Agency, which i treasure.
Please be kind and considerate of my staff at hctm.eir@usaid.gov. who will be very short-staffed and pressed over the coming months. Until you hear otherwise, Kirsten Gunsolus will be acting in my absence.
If you would like to stay in touch, I can be reached a
wish you all the best.
