@alexandraerin.com once observed that to trump, words don't mean things, words *do* things it's true of fascists generally. if you ask "what do they mean" you are already misunderstanding. you need to ask "what are they trying to do"

basically noam, people should not be scared of these hiring committees, and the hiring committees should treat applicants like people :) and if they don't, they should face appropriate consequences :)

langywangy.bsky.social @langywangy.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
perhaps you would agree: we can pursue that goal, but it's circulating maps for a system that remains labyrinthine. we can also work to change the fundamental hiring practices. the latter without the former *might* not fully succeed, but the former without the latter *cannot* fully succeed!

ok but please recognize, this means there are secret requirements. if they're not secret they need to be in the job ad we would think. secret website must exist, AND it must have certain secret information. how is that supposed to be accessible? or is it *meant* to act as a secret barrier?

langywangy.bsky.social @langywangy.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
yeah they should either email you personally, or else they should post in their job ad that they require you to have a website. death to all gatekeeping

radical idea: read the material they wrote for you, as opposed to random search results. if there's something missing, perhaps the scholar has an email address? and can be asked?

academics: hello please include A, B, and C in your job application applicant: (includes A, B, and C) academics: fool that you are, you did not also take steps D and E. how can we hire you now?

If you've got some free time on your hands one of the best things you can do is to learn a language. It doesn't matter which language it is, learning any language makes the world a smaller place and brings you closer together with people you wouldn't otherwise speak to.

“Office of Remigration” and “Office of Ethnic Cleansing” are synonyms. That’s not a rhetorical point, it’s a fact that everyone who used that word before this year would agree with.

The fact that every major news outlet includes vocal tics and hesitations when it’s a woman saying “like” and not when it’s a man saying “um” is itself wicked telling.

I have been reading the Anne McCaffrey Pern novels for the first time yeah I don't know why I hadn't read them before and I don't know why I'm inhaling them so fast now BUT importantly I know they're not trying to actually do linguistic worldbuilding but BOY do I have linguistics thoughts anyway

arguably missing are 1. the ongoing violence of standardization, 2. the alternatives that we have, and 3. how to get there. (but it's ok, those things are neither the topic nor the style they were going for)

No one I know in real life, and almost no one I know online, is talking about the profound generational evil of flying people to torture prisons in countries they've never had a connection to and where they have no protections from the monsters who do this kind of thing.

As both an academic and a writer, I am repelled by the "this looks like a long document. Would you like me to summarize it for you?" that seems to appear at the top of every pdf viewer now. NO. The *entire point* of good writing (either books or journal papers) is that every sentence has a purpose.

It’s not just the South: I was in speech therapy as a kid for having trouble with /ɹ/ and other consonants, and while they were in there they sanded down most of my Pittsburgh accent. I remember specifically them telling me not to pronounce “out” as [aːt]. It’s unfortunate

how do you begin to dismantle an oppressive system that doesn't have any coherent opposition?
100
langywangy.bsky.social @langywangy.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
in a lot of cases it's totally dominant, totally hegemonic, no opposition, nobody questions it. "oh, i need to fix my accent" "oh, we just need to violently insist on uniformity so we can Communicate" 🙄

language oppression, glottophobia, linguistic profiling... these all mean different things but come along on a little journey. we're gonna say they all fit in the umbrella of language standardization. ok? imposing uniformity through various kinds of pressure and violence, yeah?

When we talk with one another, we’re not only exchanging information. We’re enacting and reaffirming our connections to one another, and demonstrating that we see each other’s humanity. A chatbot lacks all of that. And between parent and child, that sends a devastating message.

is it enough to describe the action alone? if we want to describe what practitioners think is happening, what do we call that (and what would the 'unit' be)? belief, feeling, ideology... a lot of ink has been spilled about this, for at least 100 years 😮‍💨😩📚📚📚📚📚

langywangy.bsky.social @langywangy.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
being a foreigner, no comment on those particulars, but yeah "practice" is how many anglophone anthropologists would call these 'units.' that doesn't necessarily cover the psychological & social semiotic side of things, though
