A major failing of this country is the vilification of property taxes by opportunistic pols & affluent homeowners. Yes, property taxes often exhibit major racial & class inequities (Kahrl's The Black Tax). But it is our only real form of wealth tax & folks who can afford to pay it, should. 🧵1/2

Lots of cities have minimum heat requirements for tenants in winter but far fewer address the dangers of high temperatures that are increasingly common.

Our new analysis finds that states that tax high earners produce more millionaires. This is no surprise: Investing in an educated workforce, childcare, and reliable transit strengthens the economy and pays back dividends for everyone, including the rich. 1/4

These pied-à-terre arguments just don’t add up. $400k in 1986 was triple the avg home cost then & is the equivalent of over a million now. The person was not poor & if they can’t afford the tax they can live there, have their family live there, or sell it and buy a condo and pocket $4 million.

This was one of mine. Civil enforcement of unlawful lockouts are challenging but no one should lose their home without due process especially when grieving a loved one or recovering from an injury.

Honored to be in @lpeproject.bsky.social about the need for a power analysis in affordability politics. Narrow technocratic or deregulatory "affordability" misses the point: affordability is about confronting power dynamics at the core of the cost of living crisis. lpeproject.org/blog/afforda...

This is one of my projects. My theory was that owners who broke the law & created illegal units that would qualify a building as de facto rent stabilized would also be more likely to ignore court orders. gothamist.com/news/brookly...

Brooklyn landlords hid rent-stabilized units from tenants, NY attorney general says
Attorney General Letitia James said tenants were charged market rents for units that should have been subject to rent regulation.

This is one of my cases. The Tenants Counsel Network used deceptive marketing and provided few results aimed at tenants facing eviction. As part of the deal the firm will close down and refund $172k back to the tenants.

There's something deeply obscene and broken about the fact that Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth are bombing elementary schools in an illegal war of aggression, and there's still a sense among the opposition that it has to be explained in terms of gas prices in order to get American voters to care.

The amount of money the US government spent on troops in DC in 2025 ($223m) would have been enough to give the city's ~5,100 homeless residents each $43,000. Instead, federal troops destroyed their meager encampments.

It is that time of year where New Yorkers find out that more of our neighbors are students who are homeless. This year tally comes out to 154,000 or nearly 1 in 7 students. There are more homeless students in NYC than total students in Philly, Denver, or San Diego. www.thecity.nyc/2025/10/20/1...
