the Heroic Protector Fantasy is rarely of real use to women, it's just wish fulfillment about male posturing and it frequently exacerbates violence it's also much easier to imagine yourself kicking the ass of an obviously villainous stranger than to to actually intervene where you have influence

This is quite cool. My university is the first organisation in the world to force Microsoft to allow us to turn off copilot summaries in Word 365, after a backlash against it from staff (including, very vocally, me). That cannot have been easy for our heroic IT people so hats very much off to them!

"So many people are coming to us who have never come to the food bank before. It used to be people who were working hourly-wage jobs. Now we see salary employees." Maybe we should measure the "strength" of the economy not by the stock market but by the length of the line at our local food bank?

Also you do not have to go to a SLAC to get a liberal arts education or major in one of the fine humanities or social sciences on offer these days. But you do have to start from a position of thinking there's something inherently worthwhile to them and powerful people don't want you to think that.

I wonder how many third-party platforms and software systems my university is paying for, and at what (enormous) cost, many of which previously worked fine on internal systems. I bet it's easily north of 100. New this year: a third party platform to manage 'course reserves' for the libraries.

Something I learned in art teacher grad school is that kids who are taught that art is about the process, not the product, are more likely to stick it out through the frustration and self identity as artists later. Also that frustration is part of the process and to compare to themselves not others.

But some of A.I.’s greatest accomplishments seem inflated. Some of you may remember that the A.I. model ChatGPT-4 aced the uniform bar exam a year ago. Turns out that it scored in the 48th percentile, not the 90th, as claimed by OpenAI, according to a re-examination by the M.I.T. researcher Eric Martínez. Or what about Google’s claim that it used A.I. to discover more than two million new chemical compounds? A re-examination by experimental materials chemists at the University of California, Santa Barbara, found “scant evidence for compounds that fulfill the trifecta of novelty, credibility and utility.”
