It's now 4 hours after the attempted execution, and we (including her lawyers) still don't know where she is or if she's alive. This is malpractice in so many ways by the Tennessee Department of Corrections.

Student journalists have been heroes over the past ten years and the fact that we have allowed the world to reach a state where hardly any of them will be able to serve communities as journalists after they graduate is something we should all feel shame about

How much of a role does Greek (esp. frat) membership play as a mediator or moderator of those outcomes? For that matter, how much can frats be explained through selection and/or socialization?

Research units from across government have been gutted. More than 10,000 PhDs have left government. For example the research arm of the Department of Education lost 90% of their staff and the research office for the Secretary of Health and Human Services lost an estimated 60% of their staff.

I know higher ed is going through a period of retrenchment, and it's hitting some colleges harder than others. Despite the Chancellor's bluster, they're clearly feeling the heat in Syracuse.

Regardless, this new chancellor on their first day on the job needed to let the world know that the university's operating deficit is no biggie, upstate NY is a burgeoning economic powerhouse, and SU is rolling out a bunch of super-innovative (albeit downmarket) programs.

Just got a really weird mass-email from the new Chancellor of Syracuse University. What's especially weird about it, is that I have never had any affiliation with SU whatsoever, beyond a bunch of rejected job applications (I presume that's how they had my email).
New Syracuse Chancellor marks his territory.

Wake up, babe. The Prime Minister just dropped “hydronym”.
The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big”.

The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.

We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms.

Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always.

FWIW, Annie's probably not telling the whole story. She's persona non grata in the poker community for a variety of ethical lapses. www.vegasslotsonline.com/news/2022/04... Despite that, she pivoted from poker to popular behavioral science guru quite effectively.

Fun detail about this article: I didn't notice until it was published, but writing about AI really changed the citation structure of my bibliography. Simply put, most of my references were super-recent. One-quarter came in the first quarter of 2026 alone. Over 50% since 2025.

This essay is especially meaningful to me personally, as over the past few years, I've spent a lot of time pondering about how the search for truth co-exists with worlds of performance and kayfabe. Pro wrestling may be an "act", but so is life in general. @heterodoxacademy.bsky.social

This essay makes this case for academia, where the price of endless performance is worse science. But the lesson is not only for scholars.
