A personal anecdote about Chris Wickham, whose passing - like everyone in our field - comes as shocking news. Other people will be able to replicate this with myriads of their own examples. In the spring of 2016, I was spending three months in the Belgian Academy of Rome on a modest stipend.

I think I've seen a painting in a Ladybird book that @lbflyawayhome.bsky.social posted but the childhood memory didn't include it in an illustration, just a mention. Little Grey Rabbit or Beatrix Potter, maybe, something in passing that wasn't central to what was chosen to paint.

I remember being very puzzled when I found some of those on my roses one year, and then, looking it up, finding I was certain I'd heard of them in some far-distant children's book about the English countryside and never had a clue what they looked like.

Why, when selling pickguard covers, don't they list the diameter of the pot-holes? Possibly saying "for MIM or American Standard" is sufficient, and as I bought echt Fender pots it should be right. I'm finding attempting to measure these things without calipers is betraying me.

Personal hobbyhorse, but thinking about AI in publishing is really making me want criticism to go harder on discussing the actual style & substance of books. If we just talk about plot & vibes, we're leaving the door totally open, & missing out on the good stuff besides. "It's just words on a page."

I think a pearly white pickguard would look nice on the satiny dark green. Black, too, but black entails buying new pickup covers and one has to draw the line somewhere. Need new knobs either way, as one is defective and is what wrecked the original pot.

All the "tells" are stolen style. Everything AI does has been ripped away from the work of someone, and replicated without soul, skill, and cognition. While that thing goes on, people do what they've always done: create.

A Threads post by author Elizabeth May that says:

I just saw someone claim that Heated Rivalry, the book, published in 2019, had "obvious ChatGPT red flags." And so I have crawled out of my deadline cave to say this to people who were apparently just born yesterda:

Babes. Sweethearts. Lights of my incressingly dim patience. ChatGPT learned to write by eating romance novles like a feral racoon in a dumpster. You are not detecting AI. You are detecting the source material. Please go learn how time works.

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854

Taxing Entrepreneurial Wealth: Evidence from
Norway, 2021-2025
Marius A. K. Ring
WORKING PAPER 35854|
DOl 10.3386/w35854
ISSUE DATE October 2026
Whether imposing higher taxes on business owners adversely affects business activity by constraining investment and inducing capitalist flight is a central question in the ongoing debate on how to tax the ultra wealthy. To shed new light, I exploit a series of related Norwegian reforms during 2021-2024 that increased dividend tax rates, removed migration-related capital gains tax loopholes, and nearly doubled the effective marginal tax rate on business wealth. These reforms spurred international debate and, allegedly, an "exodus" of Norwegian billionaires (Financial Times,
2023). While I document clear effects on migration, these responses are concentrated among the top 0.1% of the wealth distribution and mostly confined to 2022 and 2023. My results indicate that at most 100 individuals left due to the reforms. I find no evidence of significant outmigration or reduced inflows of startup founders or inventors. I estimate that absent any outmigration, wealth tax revenues would have increased by 75% from 2021 to 2024. Reform-driven outmigration lowers the revenue gain to 71.5%. My findings further show that outmigrating owners' firms remain economically active and do not reduce investment. In a broader set of analyses, I examine whether business outcomes are affected, regardless of whether owners outmigrate, since firms may reduce investment both due to liquidity constraints or distortions to owners' savings decisions. I compare firms owned by Norwegian individuals subject to the wealth tax with firms owned by foreigners and other tax-exempt entities. By merging historical ownership data from Orbis with the Norwegian shareholder register, I perform these analyses on both Norwegian and foreign-domiciled firms.
Across settings, I find no evidence that Norwegian-owned firms pay out more dividends or invest less after the reforms,…

Do you like fantasy adventures? Do you like murder mysteries? Do you like a world-weary hero who's done with other people's BS? Then do I have the book for you! New cover, new publisher, same battered protagonist - The Executioner's Blade returns in October. wizardstowerpress.com/books-2/book...

The cover for the novel The Executioner's Blade by Andrew Knighton. On it, a grey-haired woman with a sword stands with a dargon's tail curled around her. In the background, dragons and fire fly above the rooftops of a city. Next to it is a section of text with blurb quotes from other authors. "A perfect balance of action and character wrapped about a delightfully twisted mystery." - Adrian Tchaikovsky, author of Children of Time. "A very enjoyable, fast paced read." - Anna Smith-Spark, author of Empires of Dust. “Mature and absorbing epic fantasy, very well worth a look.” – Juliet E. McKenna, author of the Green Man “Flawed yet relatable characters, a corrupt city, and a mystery full of twists and turns. A beautifully thought-out and engagingly written piece of fantasy.” – Charlotte Bond, author of The Fireborne Blade
