Congress is abusing the CRA to overturn public-land management plans that take years of tribal, public, scientific, and manager input, erased in days by a few political votes, and blocking any similar plans in the future. A completely anti-democratic takeover of public-land governance by congress.

NEW PAPER: The 2022 fossil fuel price jumps caused an oil and gas profit explosion. We show the US reaped the largest profit increase (USD 275bn) of any country. Big Oil claims this benefits the American people. In fact, 51% went to the richest 1%, only 1% to the bottom 50%. A 🧵

We have reached “privatize our public lands” levels of deranged libertarianism. Subsidizing mega-corporations with the loss of biodiversity and uncountable instrumental, relational, and intrinsic values our ecosystems, oftentimes irreplaceably, is something we already study, there are no benefits.

There are many ways in which the potential marriage of the goals tackling climate change and restoring biodiversity is a good thing. But also real dangers of an abusive relationship if biodiversity is subordinated to an overpowering drive for carbon sequestration and biofuels.

I fundamentally disagree w/ the idea that science is “apolitical.” Any critical thinker can see that what we call “science” is inherently invested with power, that the history of science is highly political, and that its benefits & risks are not distributed equally. It is important to be honest here
