We keep saying: "AI will handle the boring stuff, and humans will supervise." But the problem is--as AI reliability improves, it becomes really hard to motivate a human to conscientiously monitor it. In a new WP with Gerard Cachon, we describe the "human-AI contracting paradox."

This is absolutely wild, and super important. There are zillions of studies claiming that fMRI signals indicate increased brain activity, and it looks like that's often just wrong. If confirmed, this means we've misinterpreted a lot of research.

Mr Cuban, I just wanted to quickly thank you. My husband has XXXX cancer, a rare gastrointestinal cancer. We are between insurance right now and when we went to pick it up we were informed it was $29,000. We were able to get it from CostPlus for $990. Thank you for saving my husband's life.

I think this post nails the actual problem, for researchers at least—AI hallucinations would simply not be a problem in academic work if we’d not normalized citation-as-signaling rather than actual engagement—you can only cite a fake paper if you’re not in the habit of reading the papers you cite

What am I missing here? How can you review a manuscript by first askiing AI to summarize it? That’s called malpractice. Just. Don’t.

First they cut arts in schools to make way for standards and efficiency. And now we hear we need machines to come up with new ideas for us because we can’t do it. Just say No to these people. It’s dangerous nonsense. And should be disregarded and treated only with scorn.

With this latest mass shooting at Brown University, this might be a good time to mention that Bill Clinton’s assault weapons ban reduced mass shooting deaths by 43% - but after George W Bush & Republicans let it expire, mass shooting deaths spiked by 239%. It's the guns!!! :(

New preprint! @marentierra.bsky.social @irisvanrooij.bsky.social & I have been working on what CAIL means to showcase & propagate the idea of thinking very differently to tech industry norms on "artificial intelligence" Towards Critical Artificial Intelligence Literacies doi.org/10.5281/zeno... 1/
Figure 1: The important dimensions of CAILs across research and education; clockwise from 12 o’clock: Con-
ceptual Clarity is the idea that terms should refer. Critical Thinking is deep engagement with the relationships
between statements about the world. Decoloniality is the process of de-centring and addressing dominant
harmful views and practices. Respecting Expertise is the epistemic compact between professionals and society.
Slow Science is a disposition towards preferring psychologically, techno-socially, and epistemically healthy
practices. The lines between dimensions represent how they are interwoven both directly and indirectly.

Communities need used-book shops. As the trends in our world are increasingly standardized and entrenched by "predictive" technologies that stifle innovation and reduce human actions into economic categories... We need a full range of possibilities for readers and communities to explore and share.
On the left, a narrow, glass-fronted display case with a mix of letterpress, hand-bound, antiquarian, and collectors' books; stretching off to the right, 8-foot bookcases laden with literary and contemporary commercial fiction, about one thousand books out of the 6-7 thousand in that section. LED lighting and light-colored wood cases and flooring keep the room feeling relatively spacious despite the sheer quantity of books.

It's time to remove laptops from classrooms. 24 experiments: Students learn more and get better grades after taking notes by hand than typing. It's not just because they're less distracted—writing enables deeper processing and more images. The pen is mightier than the keyboard.

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features." There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

This isn’t fair to service members. The office of legal counsel is saying the actions are legal. Asking individual service members to 100% go to prison and destroy their lives is not the right approach.

Cheating with an LLM is the easiest thing in the world for a student to do, but it creates a massive, laborious headache for a prof, if you intend to take it seriously. There’s meetings, emails, discussions, moral dilemmas. It’s just incredibly burdensome, on top of everything else right now.
