Only so many drills you can do in a school year. I am guessing that earthquake drills displaced the duck & cover. If your schools didn't have something to displace more likely to keep duck & cover. My kids have fire and lockdown drills.

I did not do those in the 80s. My mom did the duck & cover drills in the 50s and 60s. We did fire alarm drills and earthquake drills (SF Bay Area).

If you are part of an academic society or a professor of any kind, public statements that you do not condone Drexel cutting off the academy of natural sciences from the public of Philadelphia is very important right now. We need your voices. Urgently.

For us it is especially bad as we are shifted late start and end thanks to horse track season. Local schools was 9/10 start this year. It means late June, so some of the national ads start before they even finish.

If you are going to ask students to read the textbook, you should at least read the literature behind the textbook. How many teaching the Central Dogma of Molecular Biology actually read what Crick wrote about it? You wouldn't be teaching DNA to RNA to protein if you did.

It would be probably be useful to know key elements they are going to see often, especially when built upon in future classes. For biochemistry, I do expect knowing the 20 common proteinogenic amino acids as it makes reading papers, looking at figures, etc. easier.

Open house yesterday for my child's class, they are working on their math facts, doing mad minutes to be fluent in their multiplication table. Teacher pointed out how it makes subsequent math easier. Fits well with our understanding of working memory and cognitive load.

Sadly, the discourse out there shows just how incurious many are and indifferent to those who are different than them. Not unrelated, there are too many who end funding to support students with disabilities. You have the freedom of speech but so do I, including thinking you are bigoted.

Looking at some of the discourse, us being able to drop the DFW rate from 15-16% to 10-11% in our intensive one-semester general chemistry course, especially for those with less prior opportunity & prep, is a negative. Good teaching should have an impact.

That is a negative version of teaching to the test. We are seeing the impact of that type of teaching (forced upon teachers) in our current college students.

Regarding NY Regents, a colleague had a child in Regents Chemistry and realized they were being taught shortcuts that only worked with a 1:1 stoichiometry. When asked, the teacher explained the regents kept those problems 1:1. With the shortcut there was more time work other problems.

Really, we are talking about wealth inequality. The Ivies are so named for the athletic league they are in together. Recruited athletes have had over an 80% acceptance rate at Harvard. Legacies around 33% and major donors ~40%.

Boghossian et al.'s "Vanderbilt report" claimed "a deterioration in scholarly standards” in the humanities. What was their evidence? The companion reports have begun to trickle out. I argue that they show no evidence to support this claim. The report should be corrected or retracted: osf.io/ta6kg
Boghossian et al.’s (2026) critique of humanistic scholarship is itself bad scholarship and should be corrected or retracted

[This version dated August 28, 2026]

Abstract: Boghossian et al.’s (2026) “Report on the State of Scholarship in the Humanities and the Humanistic Social Sciences” argues that humanistic scholarship has experienced “a deterioration in scholarly standards fueled by the substitution of political criteria for properly scholarly criteria”. I argue that their report itself represents low scholarly standards. Specifically: 1) it is primarily based on unpublished, unverifiable data; 2) the limited data that have been published (largely from unvalidated LLM categorisations) do not support the main claims of a “deterioriation in scholary standards”; and 3) the report unjustifiably generalises from a narrow set of examples (e.g., the cancelation of a panel on sex and gender by the American Anthropological Association) to make sweeping conclusions about global humanities scholarship. I describe counter-examples from past and present research in the humanities and the sciences by myself and others to show that biased and low-quality scholarship is not a new or unique problem for progressive humanistic research. While I agree with the authors that critical evaluation of the quality of academic scholarship (both humanistic and scientific) is urgently needed in today’s global political climate, the report’s strongest conclusions are not justified by their data and thus are not of sufficient quality to achieve their intended goal of helping university leaders to make policy decisions. I recommend it be corrected or retracted to resolve these issues.
Figure 2. Key data provided from each of the three internal disciplinary reports published so far do not demonstrate “a deterioration in scholarly standards”. A) History (Fleming & Wilentz, 2026), B) Literary Studies (Appiah, 2026), Sociology (Rubin, 2026). Y-axes have been adapted for clarity.Figure 1. Decades before Dolly Parton helped fund research supporting Moderna's Covid-19 mRNA vaccine, she raised money for people with HIV and AIDS and joined the 90s "Break the Silence" campaign promoting AIDS awareness, sex education & condom use - at a time when doing so in country music took courage.

Picture of Dolly Parton with a mask on with the headline from The New York Times "Dolly parton, who helped fund the moderna vaccine, gets a dose of her own medicine." The country music star broke into song before she was inoculated, and urged her fans to "get out there and get your shot"

Concur with David Mobley's post on LinkedIn regarding ACS charging high open access fees due to federal open access mandates. My college's library would love to drop ACS. ACS journals are more expensive. With austerity how can I justify the cost? #ChemChat
David Mobley with his profile photo on LinkedIn posting on that site. The post is: "I've grown frustrated with ACS's attempts to force federally funded authors to pay (extremely high) open access fees due to federal open access mandates. ACS says that their policy prevents them from allowing authors with complying otherwise. Why not just change the policy?

I've started declining ACS review requests in an effort to try and apply some pressure. As much as I respect the authors and the scientific mission, I can't justify doing free labor to help ACS force authors to pay these fees. If you want me to review your work, just submit to a different journal that is more friendly to open access policies. "
