Statement from NCTE re: the current trash fire of their decisions: ncte.org/press-update... Word on 4C27 coming by end of August. I grew up in Missouri. I'll believe the platitudes when I see actual action and change. They have burned RhetComp folks and I'm not keen to put my hand back in the fire.

Why did NCTE and CCCC officers have to sign NDAs? Do we have trade secrets about semicolons? I don’t understand. What a rotten organization NCTE is…we are educators and not defense contractors or Coca-Cola. Ridiculous. No NDAs for our new org #teamrhetoric

If I were still a member of NCTE, I’d ask them: 1. Why do you use NDAs for officers? What are you hiding? 2. What are the supposed threats to your nonprofit status? 3. What were the parameters of your Google grant/partnership? 4. What do you do with constituent orgs’ $$$ when you dissolve them?

Imagine the conversation we could have about this travesty if NCTE didn’t require Cs officers and executive committee members to sign confidentiality agreements. Folks should also ask NCTE about how and whether their lucrative grant/partnership with Google was part of what Cs “culture” threatened.

This is basically the same story of comp/rhet in English departments for decades. It's why we needed the CCCC. "The department looks forward to involving writing studies in the future of the department if possible." Did seven English department chairs from the 1980s write this memo?

I firmly believe that the #CCCC community will independently recreate itself somewhere, someday. That new organization will get my energy and my membership. NCTE will get nothing more from me.

If you're also annoyed at #NCTE for dissolving #4C27 or #CCCC, & you're a little petty, remember that they have a lot of social media presence to promote books and conferences. Comment on those posts - request accountability and transparency. Tell other NCTE members what happened.

That "special topics conference" language is really getting under my grill. It reeks of the long history of seeing composition as an extension of and lesser than literature.

College writing instruction is one of the places where academic labor exploitation is very high, and at the same time these same academic workers are at the front lines of the literacy crisis and are also the most committed to a truly inclusive university.

I will never choose to affiliate with @ncte.org, given the absolutely disgraceful way they have chosen to dissolve CCCC, a 70+ year organization central to the discipline of writing and literacy studies. I am so disappointed in the NCTE leadership. May they come to view their actions with horror.

NCTE has just summarily killed a 77-year-old organization that has shaped how writing is understood, taught, and learned, in higher education in particular. No member involvement. No transparency. No process to speak of. With friends and fellow educators like these, I guess who needs enemies.

There it is. #CCCC #NCTE
Email from NCTE Executive Committee acknowledging messages received and the following:

For many years, the Conference on College Composition & Communication (CCCC) played a critical role in serving the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) & its mission. In recent years, however, CCCC has struggled with its fiscal sustainability, declining participation, & governance challenges. As a result, earlier today the Executive Committee of NCTE made the difficult decision to de-charter its special topics conference CCCC. To clarify, today’s decision to de-charter does not mean that NCTE has altered its commitment to supporting teachers at the college and university level. This is exemplified by the fact that the NCTE College Section is thriving. The process in making this decision spanned several years, with attempts to work collaboratively with CCCC’s executive committees across multiple iterations. While the organization appreciates the years of collaboration with CCCC, after deep evaluation and thoughtful consideration, the Executive Committee concluded this step was necessary to more effectively serve the college English and writing and composition community and NCTE membership as a whole.

Although this has been a very difficult decision, we are excited about the future. This change will allow us to provide better support to the college English and writing and composition community. In the coming days and weeks, we will be working hard to make this transition as smooth as possible. We thank CCCC, its leaders, and its members for its many years of contributions and look forward to continuing to involve the composition, rhetoric, and writing communities as we move forward. NCTE remains devoted to improving the teaching and learning of English and the language arts at all levels of education. As future planning takes place, NCTE will communicate updates.

A transition team focused on supporting composition, rhetoric, & writing studies will be named imminently.

For Rhetoric/Comp/Writing folks wondering about the NCTE/CCCC mess, two things. 1. I recommend telling NCTE that you're canceling your membership until this is sorted out, and until you're satisfied with changes to the governance structure so we don't get blindsided like this again. 1/x

I agree with the critique of AI in the classroom here but want to note one thing. The argument about LMSs isn't the way to go here. It presumes LMSs are supposed to make teaching easier--I don't think they are. They increase accessibility to our courses when used effectively. So yeah, that's hard.
