My time on social media got a lot easier when I gave myself permission to not worry about unsolicited advice (criticism) from strangers, especially strangers whose accounts don't have their name and whose avatars don't have their pictures.

Each day, @wai-a-day.yatil.net shares a different resource from the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Sometimes, the resources are more technical. Sometimes they are broader. They should be on the radar for everyone pursuing a more accessible web.

My parents (81 and 82) will be sitting silently, each at their own computer, and then one will say, "Wordle in two!" The other will show admiration and astonishment. And then announce how many tries it took them to do the day's Wordle. This is one of my favorite things, and a great source of joy.

A common thing I hear is that AI can be used to "solve" accessibility. There are many things I don't care for in that mindset, but one of the things is that so much about accessibility depends on the context of the situation. AI is not going to be able know why a person made certain content choices.

You might personally choose not to use AI, but you might not have a choice as to whether your team or office uses it. If your organization is using AI to write alt text, always review it to make sure it's accurate and appropriate. AI won't necessarily understand how or why an image is being used.

This first episode ("33") is pretty great. I'd argue it is one of the top episodes of the series. I would recommend starting with the two-part mini-series before watching this first episode, as it has some good set-up and a delicious twist that gets spoiled if you just go straight into episode 1.

Also, replacing a letter this ruins content filtering. We have all these tools for muting terms we don't want to see, for whatever the reason, but they DO depend on matching spelling. Getting cutesy with euphemisms and self-censoring defeats the whole point.

Some are suggesting you deliberately write inaccurate or confusing alt text, because they say this confuses AI scrapers that are analyzing images. The purpose of alt text is to help people who cannot see the image. Deliberately misrepresenting the image is a gross misuse of alt text. Don't do it.

AI won't necessarily understand the context of where an image will appear, and why. Is the image decorative, functional, or meaningful? That's not something that AI will always be able to determine. The same image can be used in multiple contexts and need to have different alt text each time.

This also reminds me of how @stacykess.bsky.social and I have long agreed that to get journalists on board with accessibility we need to meet them where they are, and that includes translating a lot of the technical aspects in ways that people can "get" it.
