Katharine McCormick: a most consequential yet historically overlooked woman of the 20th century. She funded the development of the world’s first oral contraceptive pill & drove progress across 3 fronts: her scientific education (MIT), militant suffragist action & backing mental health studies. 1/2🧵
A beautiful black-and-white portrait of Katharine Dexter McCormick (1875–1967), the pioneering MIT biologist, suffragist, and philanthropist who single-handedly bankrolled the development of the world's first oral contraceptive pill. Set against a soft, featureless, neutral studio backdrop, the composition focuses tightly on her upper torso and face. She looks directly forward with a solemn, intense, and piercing gaze, her features composed in a serious expression. McCormick wears an elaborate, wide-brimmed dark hat adorned with a thick, light-colored decorative band across the base of the crown. Her dark, voluminous curls cascade and blend with a highly textured, thick fur or feather boa wrapped high around her neck and shoulders. Underneath, a glimpse of a fine lace or embroidered white garment is visible. The soft vintage lighting casts gentle shadows across her face, accentuating a mood of quiet determination, dignity, and historical consequence.

Ecophysiology of metal and metalloid hyperaccumulator plants
Submission deadline: 31 October 2026
Trace element hyperaccumulation in plants is a remarkable adaptive strategy with significant ecological, evolutionary, and applied interest. Hyperaccumulator species can take up and tolerate exceptionally high concentrations of metals or metalloids in their tissues, providing unique insights into plant physiology, stress responses, and trace element homeostasis. Understanding these mechanisms not only deepens our knowledge of plant evolution and adaptation under environmental stresses, but is essential foundational knowledge for developing applications including as biofortication, phytoremediation and agromining.

This Special Issue focuses on high-quality research addressing the fundamental mechanisms governing metal uptake, translocation, compartmentalization, and tolerance, with emphasis on ecophysiological and molecular regulation. It invites a range of contributions, including research papers, critical reviews, as well as methods papers.

#OTD in 1898, Marie Skłodowska-Curie and her husband Pierre announced the discovery of polonium in a paper presented to the French Academy of Sciences. They named the element after Marie's beloved native country, Poland. #WomenInSTEM
A historic, black-and-white portrait from 1895 captures pioneering physicists Pierre Curie (1859–1906) and Marie Skłodowska-Curie (1867–1934) shortly after their wedding, a union that led to their joint discovery of polonium and radium. Standing side-by-side against a muted backdrop, Marie links her arm through Pierre's. She looks directly forward with a calm, resolute expression, her wavy hair swept into a loose updo. She wears a dark, textured dress with full leg-o'-mutton sleeves and a ruffled, high-necked collar. Pierre stands slightly turned, his hand tucked into his pocket, featuring a trimmed beard and a serious expression. He wears a dark, structured wool frock coat over a collared shirt and tie. The medium-shot composition utilizes soft studio lighting, creating a dignified, solemn, and deeply atmospheric mood that reflects their enduring partnership at the dawn of the atomic age.

David Attenborough’s 100 Years on Planet Earth – live
It’s the Royal Albert Hall birthday party for Britain’s most beloved broadcaster. Which big names will do the speeches? What will the orchestra play? And will it all be overshadowed by the great man’s TV clips? Follow along here Welcome one and all to The Guardian’s liveblog of David Attenborough’s 100 Years on Planet Earth. You will be pleased to know, as I certainly am, that this is not a century-long liveblog. Instead it exists to cover the 90-minute Albert Hall spectacular that BBC One is airing tonight. You may already be aware that today is Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday, and so this is an extremely fitting tribute. Our greatest living national treasure is the subject of what’s being billed as “a journey of exploration and discovery through the prism of Sir David’s extraordinary life and career.” In short, there will be music, there will be film, there will be recollections and, if we’re lucky, there will be cake.
