This deep dive on XKCD's famous comic on all modern infrastructure manages to be important, fascinating and more than a little bit scary all at the same time. Worth a scroll. And massive kudos to Germany for their sovereign tech fund, all countries should have one sheets.works/data-viz/hol...

This is a fantastic analogy and not just because our family's laundry is my domain. Doing all the laundry helps me keep tabs on household needs, e.g. buying more socks before it's a crisis bc the kids have none without holes. Minimizing dryer use takes more of my time, but saves wear on items. Etc

I used to think the same, but over time I've come around on this--guy is providing a service rehoming the DVDs, keeping them out of the landfill and getting them to someone who wants them enough to pay and will presumably care for/enjoy em. I'm OK with him earning a commission as part of the process

so while we're all fighting to get our money out of anthropic, publishers have been filing to claim their share of the settlement and then giving it right back to anthropic--not to solve problems they have, but to then demand the editors & employees create problems for it to solve.

Here is my pitch for anyone who has worries about rail: I think that building out rail is a necessary (but not sufficient) step in transforming American cities from totally car dependent to slightly walkable, in a way that no other form of transit is.

Now’s probably a good time to say that a couple years back I turned down a five-figure offer from HarperCollins because they refused to put in a clause prohibiting AI from touching any of my books at any point in the process. I was lucky to be able to walk away, and it was the right thing to do.

Looking up at a branch and behind it a cloudless brilliant blue sky. The branch curves; most leaves are green, but some are yellow and tipped with red. Sunlight illuminates some of the leaves while most are in shadow, so that the illuminated leaves almost appear lit from within.

One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.
For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

The dealerships (two) definitely tried HARD to talk us into anything-but-the-Bolt. We eventually did manage to buy one, barely, and it's been really great for us for 3 years now. Car buying is always an ordeal but this was truly, memorably, next-level awful.

You're completely gunked up with cortisol due to the fact that your entire daily life is now underscored with a haunting awareness of the rapid erosion of your rights, dignity, and any and all social safety nets, and you're also bearing witness to the most vulnerable people immediately being persecuted. This creates a natural stress response that basically means you're going to continue having memory and organizational problems, as well as emotional imbalances.

Just for the record ALL of my kids' teachers use their preferred names instead of their legal names. This is as it should be. And also uncontroversial because their preferred names are fairly traditional nicknames but like. Just call people what they tell you to use! It's not a new concept!!

Should writing be the ONLY required class? Probably not! (It kind of is, at my university, though we’re actually the “writing, speaking, and argument” program; I’d love to add a greater focus on critical reading.) But I do think writing belongs as *a* requirement for a well-rounded education.

This shot/chaser lede by the writer is outstanding
Opening paragraph from the Wired article "Why No One Wants to Date Tech Bros" by Elana Klein:

"Engaged in a flirtatious conversation at a bar in Manhattan, 23-year-old Gary stood with a Guinness in hand as he explained to a woman why he took an engineering job at Palantir, the data analytics company cofounded by Alex Karp and Peter Thiel. Raking in a $250,000 salary would allow him to help pay off his parents’ mounting medical bills, he explained."Devastating punchline to the opening paragraph of by Elana Klein's Wired article "Why No One Wants to Date Tech Bros"

"Gary has resorted to saying he works in AI. “Even that gets some pretty bad responses sometimes,” he says. His Hinge profile doesn’t mention his employer. And sometimes he makes up stories out of thin air to justify working for Palantir—like that line about the medical debt. His parents don’t have any, nor are they ill."

a pretty good way to gauge the conversation is whether people are talking about harm or risk harm is about what's happening now already risk is about what could maybe happen in the future and basically the whole ai cult scene is in agreement that possible risks are more important than current harm
