That is definitely a problematic issue. Countries could look at not accepting dual citizenship if the other one is a citizenship of Israel.

🇬🇧 even came up in 1990 w/ its own proposal for a common currency. It was to be called "Hard ECU",with each national currency (DM,FF,Lira, etc) competing against the Hard ECU. It was (already) identified as a wrecking tactic by 🇬🇧 and quietly dropped by the other M/Ss. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europea...

The idea that sometimes pop ups that the EU was originally only about trade never stands up to scrutiny. The anti EU wing of UK politics has manipulated the EU agenda in the UK. Even rewritten history to some extent.

Even Mrs.T,in her pre-Eurosceptic days, just before #EURef1975, was quite good at selling"Europe". She was quite clear,in her head+with voters,it was to be an instrument of collaboration across different areas,"trade" being only one of them+ultimately of European integration. bsky.app/profile/er20...

Thanks, Kresten, for correctly correcting me regarding tolerance. Popper is not my philosopher of choice, but it is important to keep his paradox of tolerance in mind for the so called militant democracy. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradox... bsky.app/profile/jun....

I don't mention the 5% threshold without reason. In the former FRG, the fascists (NPD) never had more than a 2% to 4% share of the vote nationwide. Right-wing extremists were absorbed by the CDU and especially by the Bavarian CSU. This was manageable in West Germany. bsky.app/profile/jun....

Actual unification was never going to happen overnight. Everything knew that. That it hasn’t happened in 36 years…now that is deeply disappointing.

The NPD fascists weren't tolerated, and the right-wing extremists weren't accepted. After 1989, they then occupied the political vacuum in the former GDR. Statistics & maps clarify that the former FRG-GDR state border largely also (still) represents the AfD constituencies. bsky.app/profile/jun....

It seems as if the UK need an internal debate over a number of years before we truly can benefit from engaging with the UK. I listen. Currently I am still of the opinion that the UK remains a liability. The constant sense of entitlement in the arguments from many even so called pro EU Brits…makes

Fair enough. Sadly far too often when you dock into people’s arguments they are UK exceptionalists and not pro EU. They just want concessions and don’t care one bit about the EU or its citizens. The sense of entitlement/exceptionalism is IMO still the biggest barrier towards having the UK back.

Sadly there are many exceptionalists even among those in the UK that calls themselves pro EU. You can’t be both though. UK exceptionalists are anti EU…no matter what they might have voted in the referendum or what they might decide to vote in the next referendum.

Indeed. The UK used its huge financial centre and its rival currency in order to undermine the Euro and blackmail the EU into concessions. Why would we give them a 2nd chance at that (they would revert back to that behaviour no matter what political party is in charge)? The UK is a special case…

The UK understood and voted for a shared currency at the last referendum in the 1970s and look what happened! The Euro was then parked in the never, ever box. Then the UK used their veto to block the Euro rescue package. The UK must be all from the start and with the right mindset.

…actually pro EU should work on that. Not on how to get one up on its neighbours and cheat their way back in. The UK tried to destroy the EU. The EU owes the UK nothing. It definitely doesn’t have to give the UK a 2nd chance of destroying us from within. The UK needs to fundamentally reform.

…UK wants special treatment, then it hasn’t changed, hasn’t learned its lesson and simply doesn’t belong. In this case the status quo is the best which the UK can hope for with some minor changes around the edges. That is more than okay for the EU. The UK remains a threat and a liability. Those…

The UK simply lying to the EU. We already know that this would be the tactics of the UK. The UK don’t qualify (neither for membership in general nor for the Euro). The UK doesn’t belong. This disrespect of the EU, its MSs and its citizens need to stop if the UK is ever to join the EU. If the…

No, it is not possible. The UK knew the deal on leaving and the UK knows the deal on joining. Not knowing these things is due to a lack of understanding and exceptionalism. Nothing has changed since EU citizens voted Corbyn to remove their rights & SMEs voted Tory to trash their business.
