Good science writing from thoughtful scientists is a valuable cultural good, especially in a shit time like the present for science and scientists; we can learn a lot from them if we aren’t so set on demonizing them with a fantasy/theory that geneticists can only be essentialist eugenicists. 4/fin

I did laugh out loud at the comparison to Eat Pray Love. I mean, Eat Pray Love sold like 15 million copies & got turned into a Julia Roberts movie. From his mouth to God's ears! Maybe Anne Hathaway can play the Paige character.

I don't think he's a journalist; I think he's a literature postdoc? In any case, the whole review reads like an overheated term paper. It would make a good exercise for an advanced undergrad class to go through it & evaluate the arguments from a methods lens. Although....

the smoking result is more interpretable if you remember that most of the genetic variance in smoking is not specific to smoking but shared with other disinhibited, risk-taking behaviors, & that EXT-associated genetic variants are broadly associated with mortality (incl. infection, injury)

Michel! I am so happy that this was your reading experience. Part of why the book took me soooo long to write is that it was difficult to get out of defensive mode. I had to think about being interesting to a smart, good faith reader rather than convincing to a critical one, which feels vulnerable
