that makes sense, afaict most obscenities are 白讀 with a bunch of informal spellings? i’ve definitely found MC useful for 文讀, to the hilarious effect of using hokkien to predict korean readings and vice versa. throw in cantonese and you’ve got a good time

this was six months ago but one night i looked at 鑑 / 鑒 and thought “wait a minute…” and then promptly lost my mind for 30 minutes as i realized that nobody is forcing you to keep those radicals where they are. you can just rotate them!!!

鑑 / 鑒 are variant characters of each other and the latter is what you get when you take the former’s 金 radical on the left and pull it downwards into the bottom half of the character. this forces the 皿 part of 監 into the bottom right corner of the phonological component.

i repeated this “radical rotation” process, where i rotated the 濫 in 濫用 so that the 氵 on the left became a 水 at the bottom.

for 襲擊, i reversed this process and yanked 衣 to the left, so it becomes 衤; similarly 手 moves left and becomes 扌.

for 慫恿, 心 moves left into 忄. for 感情, the heart radicals swap positions.

for 聯繫, i made a creative decision to move 耳 to the middle, instead of the bottom which is much more common. 糸 moves left and becomes 糹.

for 聳峙, 耳 moves left. but i moved 山 to the bottom. i don’t like it now, i’d probably move that to the top.

for 烈焰, i swapped the positions of 火 and 灬. this made 焰 look goofy af to me.

sometimes i’ll think i’m pronouncing a word a New Way (derogatory) but then i remember i speak taiwanese mandarin, which is actually outgunned by mainland mandarin when it comes to Neonormalized (also derogatory) readings. lemme tell ya my jaw DROPPED when i heard someone read 暴露 as <bàolù>

i’ve always thought <lājī> was the more literary reading and <lèsè> was Vernacular Shit but turns out the latter is more historic and connected to 邋遢! but you’re right, MC is less useful for hokkien. i oughta treat it closer to vietnamese
