this was six months ago but one night i looked at 鑑 / 鑒 and thought “wait a minute…” and then promptly lost my mind for 30 minutes as i realized that nobody is forcing you to keep those radicals where they are. you can just rotate them!!!

鑑 / 鑒 are variant characters of each other and the latter is what you get when you take the former’s 金 radical on the left and pull it downwards into the bottom half of the character. this forces the 皿 part of 監 into the bottom right corner of the phonological component.

i repeated this “radical rotation” process, where i rotated the 濫 in 濫用 so that the 氵 on the left became a 水 at the bottom.

for 襲擊, i reversed this process and yanked 衣 to the left, so it becomes 衤; similarly 手 moves left and becomes 扌.

for 慫恿, 心 moves left into 忄. for 感情, the heart radicals swap positions.

for 聯繫, i made a creative decision to move 耳 to the middle, instead of the bottom which is much more common. 糸 moves left and becomes 糹.

for 聳峙, 耳 moves left. but i moved 山 to the bottom. i don’t like it now, i’d probably move that to the top.

for 烈焰, i swapped the positions of 火 and 灬. this made 焰 look goofy af to me.

sorry to bring you more unpleasing news: i just switched my game to zh-CN and dredgen is also 德瑞捷. but bael is 巴埃尔 which is still transliterated, but into three syllables instead of the two syllables that zh-TW did

In zh-CN, "Dredgen" is also rendered as 德瑞捷, just like it is in zh-TW. Depicted screenshot is the Dredgen title.

a friend of mine was doing duolingo when all of a sudden

the sentence is fill-in-the-blank with french: « la prof lui explique comment dire "samedi" en chinois ». an illustration accompanies it.

the illustration is of an adult showing a child a calendar. there is text on the calendar.

upon closer examination, the text on the calendar is faultily-rendered chinese. instead of saying 星期六, it uses a fallback font with what is colloquially called “tofu glyphs” that indicate the unicode codepoints that were meant to be rendered: [661F] [671F] [516D].

the clue board and story board in alan wake are rendered with full internationalization, even during cutscenes i cannot stress how incredible this implementation is

are you a normal sans serif typeface or are you lucida grande, which chooses to render COMBINING MINUS SIGN BELOW as if it's a serif LATIN CAPITAL LETTER I rotated 90 degrees

a screenshot of https://apps.timwhitlock.info/unicode/inspect?s=a%CC%A0, an excellent tool for this kind of debugging. here, i used web inspector to change the font in the Native column to Lucida Grande. the tool furthermore provides a Symbola column for contrast; for reference, Symbola, a sans serif font, renders COMBINING MINUS SIGN BELOW like an underbar version of the macron. that is to say, a straight horizontal line.
