My mother-in-law is a John Legend person, Callie requested Imagine Dragons, and as soon as my husband got the chance to pick the music he put on the new Phoebe Bridgers which is SUCH a choice.

Loved the main text of Death of the Author but found myself frustrated with what I felt were some unrealistic story points and didn't like the book within the book; then a reveal at the end made it all hang together intellectually but left me frustrated. Still another good read!

The Incandescent is also immensely readable with another fantastic world and fully realized magic system. I really loved the lead character and it brought me straight back to boarding school. God, rethinking my order again. They're all just so good!

I mentioned Shroud before, which took me about 100 pages to warm to but as soon as I realized we were getting the aliens' perspective I was obsessed. Very cool book.

The Raven Scholar probably has the most "modern YA fantasy" premise but it does it so very well, and I loved the way the author played with perspective. Another great world. Immensely readable.

I've read all three of the Shadow of the Leviathan / Ana and Din books and perhaps Drop of Corruption ranked higher here because of an overall fondness for the series. The world is just so well realized and I hope I get to spend many many books exploring it.

The Everlasting I knew absolutely nothing about and I recommend you go into it that way too, but I loved the use of second person. It reminded me a lot of my other recent* favorite book (redacted because it would give away too much of the premise). *Recent as in last decade or so.

God this is so so hard but I think I might say, in rough order, The Everlasting, A Drop of Corruption, The Raven Scholar, Shroud, The Incandescent, Death of the Author, but honestly all 6 were fantastic and I could have a different order tomorrow.

Recurring feature of our times (including all the way back to the way Uber rolled out) is that obeying the rules/laws makes you a sucker. Businesses don't, people see that, internalise it, act like selfish assholes. Go ahead, run that red light, we all know no-one is getting punished for it

A somewhat janky digital rendering of the 60s version of the USS Enterprise rendered in greenish grays with orange highlights on the front of the nacelles and the deflector dish. There is a burst of whooshing rays behind it but the background is the default natural paper color I’ve been using and not space black. Reddish-orange text around the ship set in a Star Trek TOS font reads ‘Maybe it will happen today’.

One half-baked theory I'm playing with is that fascism became inevitable when the basis of class solidarity (broadly construed) among the masses flipped from labor to consumption. We used (as in, a decade ago) to have the Fight for 15, now we have "the price of [fill in the blank]"

The fact that Zero in Star Trek: Prodigy is played by a scraggly young British man and not a kindly middle aged woman is blowing my mind, not in the “I thought that was weird and moved on” way but in the “it occupies my every thought as I watch the show” way

LA is HOT. But does it have to be this hot? Did you know shade from a single tree can drop temps by 20° or more? Yet working-class neighborhoods like South LA, East LA, and the Valley get the least tree coverage and bear the brunt of extreme heat. Let's finally cool things down for everyone.

Ballpoint pen, watercolor, colored pencil, a little crayon, and charcoal pencil.

Our guy pulls up deep in the forest on his 2-speed bike. He’s flanked by tall dark trees and his path is blocked by a massive spider. He lets the Big Fella know it’s on. “Big Fella,” he says. “I fixed my 2-speed. You still wanna race.” Reader, you know Big Fella wants in on that action. Next slide.Against a starry night sky we see silhouettes of Big Fella and our man racing down a hill. It’s unclear in the drawing who will win but Big Fella is likely about to pull away.

People are going to clown on this but we need to remember that planning for local context is important: a city with Los Angeles, California’s semi-arid Mediterranean climate only gets sunshine ~300 days a year; so it’s important to make sure you can never ever find shade in the middle of the day.
