At the end of the weekend, after the final Between Two Cairns podcast recording, we all wandered out into the street, not sure how to leave. People lingered on the corners for a while. We asked "Where are you off to?" and "Will you be here if they do it again next year?" Nobody wanted it to be over.

The game rooms each had a table of available snacks – granola bars, bananas, etc. They brought in doughnuts in the morning and pizza in the late afternoon. Amazing! Brilliant! And there were people walking around the game tables offering bottles of water. What?! So thoughtful!!

I played Perils & Princesses and it was really great. One woman showed up in costume. It was surprisingly gritty. Two characters died. One of them died twice! Ryan Lynch, (@outridercreative.bsky.social) who created and ran the game, was kinda like a muppet (Animal?) with a mustache. Adorable.

I played a Mausritter hack called Mud + Lasers by @bad-quail.itch.io. "A military sci-fantasy hex crawl inspired by the Mimban bits of Solo: a Star Wars Story. Unwilling conscripts fight and die on the front lines ... a desperate few plan their escape." Pretty great! And the lore was DEEEEEEEEEEEEP.

The place had a ton of character, with murals and art and artifacts, many of which were thematically appropriate. It would be hard to imagine a better place for a con that size. (And they had a Dreamcast set up in one room!)

The Norse Hall was an ideal venue. (www.grieglodge.org) A bunch of small, cozy rooms. There was one crowded room (The Dining Hall) but most of them were quiet and had lots of space between tables. There were lots of nooks and crannies where you could chill out and get a break from the crowds.

Hi, thanks for posting! We do appreciate you thinking of us even though we have to moderate.

Our stance on all AI generated content (Images, Video, Voiceovers, and whatever else LLM based AI gets up to in the future):

At best, they are approximations of street fighter characters as the AI has no clue what it is trying to create. Because of this, there is no street fighter content so they are not allowed. (rule 1)

Also, they aren't allowed per our source rule. As AI sources cannot be tracked, we must assume that they use uncredited sources in the learning data. (rule 5)

Finally, AI images, video, text, and voiceovers are barely any different than posting a screenshot of a google search. The level of effort is so low that we consider it spam (rule 3).

Because of these reasons, AI art and other AI content is not allowed.

The deathmarch stagger of our conjoined Backerkits has reduced us to broken meat. Hauled ever-onward by the yoke of Goodman Games’ success, feet red-raw and ragged, we squint into the thin light of the fourth dawn and curse our hubris.

We only wanted to make a book. We are not allowed to make the book; the money will not come. Goodman Games’ coffers swell beyond reckoning and twist the rusted iron wheels that carry them onward with a migraine screech: innumerable, unrecognisable coins from empires old are stacked high upon them like god’s tuppenny falls, and we snatch up fallen currency with splintered fingernails out of a desperate desire for something - anything - to do, as though our actions have repercussions and words have meaning. The money will be ours once this is over.

And this will never be over.

Backerkit - the mad monarchs above us, the lunatic godlings that rub their palms together in gibbering glee at the thought of their ever-swelling tithe - have decided that we will do this forever. We should have realised that when several people gave money to one of our campaigns before it even started that their intentions were not pure. Now, waiting for the Sahara to trickle through the choke of our hourglass, we can see that limited-period crowdfunding in the style of Kickstarter was never their plan at all. Now, as we glance at Monte Cook - himself a prisoner, shackles willingly fit to his own wrists, just like us - and we see the ENnie-award-winning light fade from his haggard, bloodshot eyes as he grips the filthy collar of a fallen Social Media and Community Lead to drag them back upright and onward, we realise that Backerkit dreamed of a shop that is only open for the next ten minutes forever.

Megadungeon Month will continue until the sun expands and immolates whatever tattered remnants of the earth remain: the miles-wide flotilla of plastic waste in the Atlantic, nuclear waste buried deep beneath the Mojave, Jeff Bezos’ hyperlinked ur-cadaver in his orbital bunker and us, ashen-faced and marching into our final sunrise.

To kill us now would be a kindness to which Backerkit will not deign to stoop. We will do this forever. You can always give us money and you will never receive your books. The last-minute sale will stretch on into eternity, drawn taught and alien like matter approaching an event horizon. We will traipse ever-onward at Backerkit’s brutal behest, caught up in the slipstream of a megadungeon ten times our size, and rue the day we dreamed of publishing a book outside of traditional means.

We are all damned.
