If you're thinking about using gen-AI to "write" books, this 🧵 is for you. I’m a highly experienced editor who’s been in the biz a long time. Recently I’ve had manuscripts come to me where the author has used gen-AI – not for writing, I’ve been assured, but for “structuring” or "organising"

Adulthood is having as many marshmallows as you want.
A black mug from Matilda: The Musical, full of hot chocolate and a large number of small multicoloured marshmallows. There is a full layer, but you can see the hot chocolate peeking through. The same mug, with many more marshmallows. You cannot see any hot chocolate and the marshmallows have formed a mountain that rises higher than the lip of the mug.

I'm listening to a new audiobook and having trouble getting into it. But worse than that, I can't figure out if the issue is the writing, the translation, or the audiobook narrator. Recently listened to a book narrated by John Hopkins, who was *excellent*. This one, maybe not.

Federal judge has ordered the release of Liam Ramos (the bunny hat boy) and his father. A brief and rather remarkable order. Clearly written to be shared widely, so please do. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...
Ultimately, Petitioners may, because of the arcane United States immigration system, return to
their home country, involuntarily or by self-deportation. But that result should occur through a more
orderly and humane policy than currently in place.
Philadelphia, September 17, 1787: "Well, Dr. Franklin, what do we have?" "A republic, if you
can keep it."
With a judicial finger in the constitutional dike,
It is so ORDERED.

Been listening to short stories by Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle this holiday. Why are Christie’s writing about women so much more repellent than Doyle completely ignoring half the population? (Also, I do NOT recommend Grant Allen. An author best left forgotten, in my view.)
From the short story, “The Great Ruby Robbery” by Grant Allen.

Such things often happen.
We're constantly called in to investigate a case, when it's only a matter of a lady's care-lessness."
At that Persis flared up. A daughter of the great republic isn't accustomed to be doubted like a mere European woman. "I'm quite sure I took them off," she said, "and put them back in the jewel case. Of that I'm just confident. There isn't a doubt possible."
Mr. Gregory redoubled his search in all likely and unlikely places. "I should say that settles the matter," he answered, blandly.
"Our experience is that whenever a lady's perfectly certain, beyond the possibility of doubt, she put a thing away safely, it's absolutely sure to turn up where she says she didn't put it." Persis answered him never a word. Her manners had not that repose that stamps the caste of Vere de Vere; so, to prevent an outbreak, she took refuge in Browning.

The writing was fucking insufferable. A freshman comp class meets TV writing with super DRAMA!! and loads of cuts. Why the fuck were the actors screaming every line?
(Because that's how you communicate
FEELINGS apparently?) The real question is why the hell they got a standing ovation at the end of it. I guess I'm out of step with what audiences like. But honestly, that's fine. My guesses, pre-Google: the author has never experienced terminal illness, substance dependence or small-town poverty. If I'm wrong, I will be fucking shocked. Should have considered it a huge red flag that all three were in one play and there was no interval.

The word 'god' underwent a gender change. It comes from the neuter Proto-Germanic noun *gudan. This is shown by Old English, Old Norse and Gothic, where its descendants still had a grammatically neuter form. Their masculine gender was introduced by Christianity. Click my graphic for more:

A student is absent for whatever reason, say sports, or illness and they need to make up some work. They take awhile to make it up, and then complete the work. Their parents want their grade immediately updated and they do too. You have 180 students, so that's not possible. What happens?

What a beautiful May Day to launch the fight for the rights of our labor - #NEH staff and grantees alike - and for the #humanities. Our work to preserve and make accessible #history and #culture for all people is NOT expendable. @paulakrebs.bsky.social @acls1919.bsky.social
Screenshot of the AHA statement that says, "The humanities are not a luxury," said MLA executive director Paula M. Krebs. "They are a necessity, teaching people vital skills, including how to effectively communicate, construct arguments, evaluate evidence, and build connections across cultures. Cutting the NEH's funding and staff jeopardizes not only the work of the MLA and its members but also thousands of locally led programs across the country that provide Americans with access to essential education. In the face of these unprecedented and destructive cuts, humanities leaders must fight back together."

Spent an hour this morning trying to research cat food and having my time utterly wasted by AI slop. These are the thousand cuts that make me want to throw the whole field off a cliff.
“Cats are known for their independence and mysterious nature”. Yeah, that’s how I’ll begin this piece evaluating cat foods. “The 7lb bag size is convenient for households with one or two cats…” And if you have more, well I guess it’s a shame that pet foods don’t come in different size bags. “The standout feature“!!! I think a computer has been sucking up too many tech blogs. Ah, yes. A meaningful conclusion.
