I'll to come right out and say it: statistical extrapolation is *fine*. One of the most useful ways to understand the present and anticipate the future is measuring the things that happened in the past, find the correlations among them, and extrapolate likely future outcomes from those correlations.

Great thread by EMB, and a lot of the common moves that we come across when people defend systems sold as "AI". I would add another which is the deployment of the term "guardrails", which is a meaningless term, especially in the labor policy space.

Yep. The value of corporations rolling out the rainbow carpet isn't what's in their heart of hearts, it's the society-wide signaling of "acceptance is good, bigotry is bad." Even if entirely insincere, it tells society "we think the majority of our customers expect this," and that's good!

Just saw a post from a Mississippi Gulf Coast high school deadnaming their trans salutatorian. The replies are filled with hundreds of students, locals and fellow Mississippians correcting/admonishing the school and calling him by his correct name. And this is in a very conservative county.

I can testify that this is not an effective way to engage students in a learning experience because this is what I was doing in my
earliest days as a TA in graduate school when I knew nothing and had no experience with teaching. My students would look back at me, blank-faced until one of them had mercy on me, raising their hand and saying, "Uhh, it was alright."

I feel like "academic hiring" discourse is always kind of downstream of the fact that in the 50s we started building a giant public system to make a college education almost universally available and in the 80s and 90s we started taking it apart to go back to the only-the-rich model
