For the past week, I've heard a lot of people say "provincial and municipal elections happening at the same time is confusing, especially since I don't fully understand what a city is in control of." So, I did a four minute explainer piece to try and help www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqlh...

I had enjoyed Tusks of Extinction but not so much that I thought I would be this into another book by Nayler. But he wove together the different aspects of the stories so well!

Just finished Ray Nayler's The Mountain In the Sea and really, really enjoyed it. And look at this cover! 💙📚
Blue cover of The Mountain in the Sea. Has a stylized octopus with symbols drawn along the tentacles where suckers would be. (This is a hint about some of the content of the novel).

Also, I haven't actually finished it yet, but I feel like you should read Beautyland. The protagonist is a woman who may be an alien (or just feel like one) who was born in Philly in the late 70s. It is hitting a lot of my childhood, I expect it might be similar for you.

My whole day has been eaten by fiction. First, I had to finish What We Are Seeking by Cameron Reed (which is GREAT) and then I started Beautyland by Marie-Helene Bertino (which I am also loving). I have done v little but read today.

Having written a TV show built on "deep dives on one bad rich guy per week" with one version 2008-2012 and another 2021-2025, I'll say that the OG evil rich guys were evil greedy assholes, and the new rich guys are mentally disordered perverts, and so do evil. And not the good kind of perverts.

They're also almost always about women and queer people in left-leaning spaces, which says whom we reflexively think of as toxic or annoying. I guarantee some fantasy football league is falling apart over some petty asshole, but he doesn't become a symbol for the annoying left. He can just be Jeff.

The queer bar story and the bad art friend story and any number of other "toxic person in a small community" stories succeed because they're inherently compelling narratives about people who transgress boundaries in ways we can recognize from our own lives. (FOR FUCK'S SAKE CONTINUED KEEP READING.)
