Just finished Ray Nayler's The Mountain In the Sea and really, really enjoyed it. And look at this cover! 💙📚
Blue cover of The Mountain in the Sea. Has a stylized octopus with symbols drawn along the tentacles where suckers would be. (This is a hint about some of the content of the novel).

Especially this paragraph:
Here's the thing: I think these guys (and they often tend to be guys) really do believe what they say. their own AI freaks them out. But having followed their internecine discourses for years now, I also have to emphasize this: The majority of these folks are weirdos who got into AI because they ingested all types of speculative doomsday fantasies from the jump. Then they locked themselves into claustrophobic Silicon Valley echo chambers populated exclusively by fellow catastrophists and lost their grip on other ways to perceive the real world (and their own tech). You can and should be concerned about the impacts AI is already having in our time, while also realizing that these folks do not share your particular concerns. These guys are not checking the deadly air pollution stemming from their data centers or keeping a lid on the surveillance of everything, both issues affecting real people right now. No, they would rather keep the discussion focused on hazy future visions of a Matrix on steroids and christen themselves responsible stewards as they continue to trade gobs of investments among their own labs and institutions with no self-imposed caution. Anthropic's rank and file are true believers whose doomsaying has incidentally overshadowed their employer's delayed IPO, cancelled business deals, supplication toward the Trump administration, and planned tracking ops on anti-data center protesters."

Weds night, when the rain stopped, we got a beautiful sunset and took some group photos. The next morning, we paddled back to Tofino to finish the trip.

Wednesday was just ALL RAIN. We had set up tarps and stayed dry as well as we could. Mostly napped and read.

We paddled 18 miles in a day so we could get close to a good beach where we knew we could shelter for the storm. We wanted to arrive there in the morning to get good camping sites! On the way, we saw grey whales!

Watching the weather, we saw a storm coming in in a few days, so we changed some of our plans and did an 18 nautical mile paddle from Half Moon Beach via the inside route of Flores Island and camped at Chetarpe, which was back on Vancouver Island.

Vancouver is having a very pretty night.
Sunset. In the foreground is Kits pool, which is a 125 yard long outside lap pool on the waterfront. The sky is cloudy. There are mountains in the background. To the left/west the sky is a deep orange as the sun sets.

We camped for two nights at Half Moon Bay because we were going to the natural Hot Springs just across the channel. So day 3 was hot springs and just chilling at camp, which was nice.

On Day 2, we paddled from White Sands to Half Moon Bay on the outside of Flores Island. We experienced about 1.5-2 meter swell, which was *interesting!* One of our group members got v. v. seasick tho and needed to be stabilized and towed. But we saw a Mola Mola (image from the internet).
Large flat round fish. It looks like it's just a fish head with no body, but that's just what they look like.

We just did a week long kayaking trip along the west coast of Vancouver Island. We launched from Tofino, traveled along the inside of Vargas Island, crossed over to the Catface mountain range, and set up camp at White Sands for night one.

I love this picture from the last night of our kayaking trip. The rain had just stopped after pouring for about a day and a half and we tried to do a “silly” pose. Somehow, the background actually looks fake to me, but it’s really not!

A thing I enjoy: we are the apartment in the building where people can hide things from their kids. We hide a lot of Christmas gifts but, this week, we’re hiding this guy:

Is it possible that my cats are just getting CUTER? I think they might be. I cannot explain how cute they are.
Tortie cat lying on her back on a blue chair. She has one ear folded over under her head like she's just trying to kill you with the cute. Close up of calico cat in a ball. She has her little paw wrapped so tight around her little face. It's excruciating in its cuteness.
